Mitral Valve Cyst

Posted by momoffive @momoffive, Sep 28, 2018

I went in for an echocardiogram for anemia and a slightly enlarged heart. During the ultrasound, the technician found a cyst on my mitral valve. My cardiologist told me that it was a pretty rare condition and has been looking for another cardiologist to refer me to. Does anyone else have any experience with a mitral valve cyst or know a cardiologist that has experience with them?

Hi @momoffive, and welcome to Connect. I have to admit I’ve never heard of mitral valve cysts before. That said, I did some research about medical conditions involving the mitral valve and cysts, and learned that mitral valve cysts or blood cysts are indeed rare.
“Blood cysts are benign, congenital tumours of the heart endothelium, found most commonly on heart valves.”

Since they can sometimes also be present as tumors in the heart (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5292983/ ) I’d like to introduce you to @maggielaf who recently shared her experience with heart tumor in this discussion:

I’d also like to mention that Mayo Clinic's Department of Cardiovascular Medicine is one of the largest and most integrated practices in the United States, and has been recognized as one of the top Cardiology and Heart Surgery practices in the nation. Mayo Clinic cardiologists are experts in treating heart conditions, including those that are rare and complex.
