What helps with mental agitation of misophonia?

Posted by llilydolly @llilydolly, Dec 16, 2021

12-year-old granddaughter has had symptoms of Misophonia for about 18 months. It has recently gotten much worse. She has self-hate and is rejecting her family. She is beligerent and self-destructive, and has had to be hospitalized. This is believed to be a limbic nervous system abnormality. What treatments are available to treat the mental agitation and aggression?

I have no medical training bu i wonder could misophonia be confused wih or mistaken for one thing i have now, hyperacusis...where noise sounds louder than it is etc. connected with tinnitus
My daughter is told its her issue when problems listening to her partner eat and chew food with open mouth and crunch on crispy treats etc., noisily; but my feeling isL why isnt he part of the problem ..she doesnt have this feeling with anyone else eating.... and get him to stop making such loud noises when he eats???

Misophonia is caused by the bands in the brain being thicker than normal according to 1 professional. Misophonia can have a visual, odor and a touch trigger for a person as well. The very sight of somebody sweeping food from their teeth when eating sends my daughter to rage.

Sorry to read about what you are going through. Am not knowledgeable about this and cannot offer help but am interested as an adult family member cannot stand the noise of someone she lives with making noise eating such things as potato chips, crunching, etc. One different may be that the relative eats with mouth open - not sure if because of nasal blockage etc., but am wondering if it is only this particular noise or of others eating softer foods with mouths closed. It doesn't sound as traumatic as the above stories and it must be horrible/frightening to have this ... does your Doctor know and has he/she suggested any possible medication or some sessions with a therapist..... hope get some more comments on here to help you through this to find the cause and cure! Kimberly, misophonia affects the whole family. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this. Getting support can make a big difference. You might appreciate the information on the Misophonia Association's website, which includes a provider directory: https://misophonia-association.org/

Have you considered seeking counselling with cognitive behavior therapy or similar?

I have learned a lot about misophonia resources that have been life saving. I would be glad to talk with you if you want information I have spent a year gathering.
Also there is 2 training events coming up.
A misophonia conference in Albuquerque New Mexico on the second third and fourth of November and then through Macedonia international. They are offering a parent clinician and individual training for parents and people that work with our children on November 7 and 9th in the evening. If you sign up for the class you have access to the training for 30 days and you can use your signup for the entire family /team for your child. The lady teaching that has been a great resource for our situation. I would be glad to share resources if you want to email me.
