Weigh loss promo videos on social media: Fraudulent use of Mayo

Posted by airwin08 @airwin08, 1 day ago

Hi all, I was reaching out to see if these mayo clinic doctor videos I've been seeing all over my Facebook page using microneedle patches to help their patients lose weight. Are these true?

@airwin08, thank you for bringing this fraudulent use of Mayo Clinic's name and reputation to our attention. I have sent the information to our Business Relations and Legal departments for review and to have the ads taken down.

This is a good warning to all of us. Always fact check information and advertisments. The videos are likely AI generated and not real people and most definitely not Mayo Clinic doctors. This type of advertising is known as "deep fakes."

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Here is a good article written by Mayo Clinic to help spot fake health information

In this case, the advertisers tried to mis-use Mayo to give credibility to their product. Mayo Clinic never advertises products like this.
