Metoprolol Withdrawl

I started on Metoprolol Suc 25mg back in 2018 due to increased heart rate and BP...Heart rate sometimes topping 180 per minute. A few times my BP was higher than could be measured...then 2019 comes along and I found out I had an egg allergy. I didn't correlate the two as being the same issue and eventually, in 2021 my Metoprolol Suc was increased to 50mg.

After I really started watching my egg intake...that is very hard as just about everything has some sort of egg in it and my allergy was whites and yolks. My pulse would drop down into the 40's at night and I could go exercise and barely hit 70.

Talked to my doctor and asked if the egg allergy and BP issues could be related and was told no, that I needed to stop drinking any form of caffeine. Continued have issues with low pulse and lightheadedness. Was referred to a cardiologist and after giving my background was told to tapper from 50 mg to 25 mg for 4 days. I was nervous so I went a step further and split the 25 mg in half and took 12.5 for 4 days.

The first week was fine with a few episodes of High BP and Pulse but they told me to expect fluctuations for a week or two. So now starting on Day 5, I have been waking up with headaches...which if I take 2 migraine tabs it goes away but it happening for the 4th day now. Has anyone else had any headache issues coming off Metoprolol and how long did it last.

@ctholen Keep us posted. I hope it goes well. My doc switched me to Bisprolol…i am also hoping it works. Metoprolol has been pretty good until they tried to help my GERD with Voquenza. I think we all need a Ph.D pharmacologist to oversee our meds!

I would find another Cardiologist with plenty of experience to treat you. I have been on Metoprolol 100 mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening and sometimes my heart beat goes low in the mid 40s. The Cardiologist adjusted the dosage and I am still taking it doing fine. Best luck to you.

@ctholen I don't mean to come across as being argumentative, but it sounds to me, just based on your words above (and how I have interpreted them 😀 ) that you had a ....thankfully....rare episode of a tachyarrhythmia. I don't see how going off metoprolol, or even a reduction of the dose, made a difference unless it didn't have enough oomph at your new low dose to keep your rate lower than the 167 BPM you cite. At that high rate (I have gone as high as 180 !!!), it means your ventricle was also trying to keep pace, and it was careening away at that high rate. It's called RVR, or 'rapid ventricular response.' Those words 'should' appear on any formal diagnosis if you have a recent paper showing it.

Even so, I wouldn't dream of trying to tell you you're wrong; you know you best, and if I were you'd ask about an alternative like Sotalol or Diltiazem....they work for a lot of people, and one of them might be just the ticket for you.

@bajjerfan I hadn't heard that, but I suppose it stands to reason: it's a 'beta-adrenergic' inhibition drug, so if a person is experiencing a strong emotional response, such as fear, the adrenal cortices will produce lots of adrenaline. Adrenaline, among other intended responses, causes the heart to beat forcefully and to speed up...'fight-or-flight.' Metoprolol is meant to stunt that response, and that is why it is also good for 'incipient hypertension.'

I was on three BP meds; Metoprolol being one of those. I stayed VERY "fuzzy headed", and could hardly focus on anything. I stopped all of the BP meds. The fuzzy head stopped! I researched, and found that is one of the main symptoms of Lisinopril. I felt much better OFF the meds. My doctor talked me into taking a different drug, since my |BP was still a bit high. I now take 10mg of Olmesartan. She prescribed 20 mg, but that caused the fuzzy head, so I break them in half. Good luck!

Hi @gloaming, thank you for the information. Does the Galaxy Watch 7's work in the USA with all its features ? (sleep apnea detection, blood pressure monitor, ECG, Heart Rate, SO2, sleep quality and stages, etc). I understand the features available is based in the location where you bought the watch not the location where it was made in. I wonder in what location did you buy your watch. In summary, I really need to buy the watch for my severe heart condition that I am sure will help me to monitor better than the ECG. I have severe sleep apnea, heart murmur, 2 heart attacks, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, leaky valve. Any information will be truly appreciated.

i have a galaxy 965 sport watch that provided first indication i had atrial flutter. i was sitting watching tv when watch alarm sounded and indicated i had sitting HR of 144. NO OTHER INDICATIONS! no pain no nausea no weakness, etc just the watch alarm. went to emergency. room. and they verified flutter and “ultimately” i was prescribed metoprolol and blood thinner (eliquis 5mg). because i also take prozac my prescription was lowered from 100 to 50mg. no further heart flutter.
HOWEVER: i am very active (mountain bike and running) and with metoprolol i find my heart rate is drastically affected. rides/runs at up to 150 bpm are now restricted to around 100 bmp before i go into 02 debt. i also experience weakness and fatigue i am so frustrated. today i made an appointment with my cardiologist (i’m retired military using landstuhl hospital in germany) to reduce or preferably stop using metoprolol. without my garmin 965 i would NEVER have had an induction i had a heart problem.

@plumto66 keep your appointments with your Cardiologist he is the one that will help you with that. I am sorry metoprolol appears not to work well on you. Your Cardiologist will know what is the best for you. I hope you get better.

Once in awhile I would get a flushing type reaction to it. It's a known infrequent event in elderly people. Was also taking Metyrapone at the time. IIRC no episodes since I stopped the Metyrapone.
