Metoprolol: Are you experiencing side effects?

@terrisanyone Welcome to Connect! I see that this is your first posting! I, too, need a rest after a visit to the gym or a walk. I find relaxing with reading, online games, reading emails for about 30 minutes helps, sometimes I doze a bit. Do ask your doctor if this fatigue is in line with expected outcomes for your unique (we all are unique) situation. I had to stop taking the medicine because i also have Prinzmetal angina or coronary vascular spasms. Metoprolol doesn’t work well with that condition and the medicine use to treat it. Isomobide monotrate(extended release of nitroglycerin)

Yes. I have started taking the 25mg succ form at night. I have polyneuropathy. I started 10 days ago because of heart monitor results of a rhythm problem. I’m having all kinds of problems from headache to numbness and pins all over and cannot sleep without being woke up at night. Please feel fatigued and unstable at times. I’m going to be 76 next month and don’t why my cardiologist didn’t take any blood tests and treadmill testing before hand. Gave the pill and made my return follow-up for six months and that was it. This drug is very dangerous and you can’t just back off of it without serious problems. I also need spine back surgery now but my orthopedic surgeon says can’t do surgery with me taking this medication. Any body have any ideas?

Good morning...I take 100 mg twice a day...My cardio told me it is an old drug and that there are alternatives.
I then had my appt with my blood pressure doc and asked if I might have an alternative (did not bring up the cardio comment...did not want to step on toes). He said he will leave it as is as it is needed to keep my BP in control. My BP is in control but for me the med creates a dragged out feeling and no energy from the time I wake up and throughout the day. I will bring it up again next appt...

@wfsouza First of all, welcome to Connect! Yes, all drugs have side effects, and you are having several of them. I am as surprised as you are that "my cardiologist didn’t take any blood tests and treadmill testing before hand." Especially the blood work. Have you considered seeking another opinion and/or a different cardiologist? Age 76 DOES mean that you deserve the same high level of care as any person at any age.

Metoprolol is a BP medication, as you probably know, I take 50mg each morning (SUCC) to "help my heart work less intensely" ever since a septal myectomy in 2022. I also developed arrythmia after the surgery, fancy medical name for an irregular heart rhythm. May I suggest consulting with a cardiologist whose area of specialty includes rhythm issues and/or electrophysiologist (they specialize in such matters)? Some participants in these Metoprolol discussions found that taking the drug in the morning helped, a question for your doctor.

Isn't it maddening that a drug that is supposed to be beneficial has an extensive list of side effects, many of which sound horrifyingly worse that the condition the drug is supposed to treat? I have HOCM. Had a septal myectomy in 2019. Horrible experience. Anyway, I used to but I don't anymore because I was getting terribly dizzy from it. It was reduced and some time later I got more dizzy spells. He then stopped me from taking it altogether. That is fine with me. I don't like taking drugs if I don't need to. I still have plenty more to take lol.

@walkinggirl I have been taking for 13 days now and horrible pains all over, sick to my stomach, tremendous fatigue to say the least, plus I think it has flared up my polyneuropathy too. I want to get off of it immediately, but I see the bad things that happen when doing that. I need spine surgery which now the orthopedic surgeon won’t operate until the heart problem is solved. I was supposedly given this because of a heart monitor testing showed my heart was skipping. I did not have high blood pressure either.

@christine270 Not only that I have pain and aches all over my body. I have polyneuropathy with it. It was supposed to be for a rhythm problem only. The blood pressure when ever I go for an appointment at my PCP is good as my cardiologist. I had wore a heart monitor for 48 hours. The cardiologist said it was skipping and jumping all over the place. Now I am almost two weeks into this medication and things are horrible feel sick to my stomach, coughing, aches and pains and fatigue. Soon as I took the pill last night at 6pm the lousy feeling and fatigue started right up.

@anonymousanonymous Glad you were working with your doctor to get off Metoproplol, have the dizzy spells stopped? For sure, none of us wanted to get into the queue for a septal myectomy, but here we are telling our tales. Where did you go for yours? When people have many medical concerns, I that there needs to be a medical coordinator. The job would keep track of the various areas of care, and more importantly, all prescribed drugs and possible interactions. It could be that the Metoprolol was interacting with another medication....Agreed 100%, not taking drugs if you don't need to, but why would the doctor prescribe it if it was not needed?

@wfsouza Do you have plans to see a electrophysiologist? These experts in the electrical workings of hearts would be the ones to figure out why your heart is skipping. He/she may see something on the heart monitor report that a cardiologist may miss. Please look into that. Is the skipping something you feel?
