Medicine’s

Posted by ranch @ranch, Nov 8, 2022

I am trying to find a system that will work for my wife that assures she takes her meds. At present she keeps them in the bottles in medicine chest in bathroom. She functions well but has very little memory. She is reluctant to change method. I can’t tell if she takes them or not. She is 82 years old and habits or hard to break. I am 83 and it’s hard to keep everything straight.

This works so far for my husband:
He has them in a small case so they are portable to take to the doctor. He turns the bottles upside down that he doesn’t take. He writes on the top of the bottles with a permanent marker am or pm for the prescriptions he does take. You might introduce a pretty case by saying how convenient it is to take to the doctor. We both have a case to keep the prescriptions always in one place.
Hope this is helpful.

The way i know for sure that my husband takes his meds daily is that I give them to him. We take our meds together...we both have AM and PM meds.

Ranch, if she has very little memory it will probably be difficult for her no matter what type of system you set up. I give my husband his meds, in fact I usually put them in his mouth and hand him a glass of water to swallow them. I watch to make sure they go down. He only takes a few actual meds, some are supplements. We’ve been doing it this way for a long time so it’s just part of the routine. It’s too important to take a chance of missing them.

The system I use for my mom, who has Alzheimer’s , is to use a weekly pill box that has compartments for each day of the week. It has 4 compartments for each day: morning, noon, evening, and bedtime.
My mom takes several meds plus vitamins.
I fill the pill box in advance. I use the appropriate compartments based on the prescription instructions.
My mom is currently able to get the pills out of the box and take them at the designated time.
A benefit of the pill box is I can easily see is she has taken or missed a dose.
As her disease progresses and her abilities decline, I will provide more assistance, such as getting the pills out of the box and handing them to her with water at the appropriate time of day.

I use 6 pill caddies with AM and PM pockets. I prefill them and use it 1) determine if the current day’s chamber is empty; 2) Stimulates use of calendar .

I use a weekly pill sorter that has morning and evening compartments. I fill them with her meds every week. I typically remind her saying: "Did you take your Monday morning pills." Sometimes she remembers on her own, in which case I compliment her on remembering.
