Looking for book
Hi everyone…in a nutshell…57 year old husband has dementia; I’m still teaching full time; we have 3 young kids ages 4, 3, and 2.
Money is tight as I’ve had to take time off work no PTO left. I’m looking for the book THE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY by Emma Heming Willis. Does anyone have a copy they’d be willing to let go?
Many thanks from a sleep deprived, majorly stressed out wife and mom!

The book you're looking for is fairly new and is probably in demand due to the author and the person for which it was written - you will probably not have a lot of offers for that one. However, there is a very good book, one that I used while caring for my wife suffering with dementia. You may find this one at your local library "The 36 Hour Day" It's been around for years, currently in it's 8th printing, very comprehensive. It helped me during the most difficult time of my life. Good luck, stay strong and take care of yourself, so that you can take care of him.

7 ReactionsEmma Heming-Willis' book did help me a lot. I read/listened to it on Libby (OverDrive). It's an app that allows you to use your library card to check out e-books and audiobooks. Anyone can sign up for the Dementia Australia Library and access e-books or audiobooks about dementia. They have TONS of helpful books, including "The Unexpected Journey" and "The 36-Hour Day." (I live in the United States and was able to access their library.) Your school might even have access to OverDrive books via Sora.

8 ReactionsI have Emma Willis’s The Unexpected Journey. It was a gift from a friend. I’m reading it slowly and finding it helpful. If you don’t have it from another source in a couple of weeks, write to me on this forum and I will mail you my copy.

5 ReactionsTeepa Snow's website has some very helpful live online courses regarding caring for a partner with dementia. These have a cost but to me were worth it. I learned so much about the disease and how to cope with the feelings that result from caregiving. There are also many resources that are free that might be helpful. I have found that learning as much as you can about this new journey that you and your husband are now beginning will be very helpful for you to understand the disease, what it can look like, the different stages, and how to take care of yourself which I think needs to be your top priority. Please continue to post here. I'd a safe place to express your feelings, frustrations and fears. There are so many helpful people who are will to share what works for them.
God bless you and your family and may He give you the courage that you will need to get through this.

3 Reactions@brn2tch I read your post looking for the "The Unexpected Journey." I can't fathom having a full time job, trying to raise and juggle the schedule of 3 small children, while you're a caregiver to a husband with dementia (and no PTO left) now left dealing with the financial spin of it all. I kept thinking of your post, if you send me a private message with your name and address, I will happy to find your book as a Mother's Day gift to send to you. We need to find ways to bring joy to one another. Best, Karla

I agree
..The 36 Hour Day is, in my opinion, more helpful as it compiles strategies from many people (caregivers, researchers, doctors, etc.)who have worked together and researched ideas to help with many types of dementia. You should check the library as they may have this book and a sign up list for Emma's book. Best wishes.....you can and will power through this!
