Long COVID providers/specialists?

Posted by godismykeeper @godismykeeper, Jun 19 8:25am

Hello! I’ve been trying to find a provider that specializes (or has a good understanding of the research) in Long COVID or post viral symptoms. So far all I can find are long covid clinics that seem to be geared more towards rehab after the acute phase of the illness. I’m open to nationwide telehealth options or local options in the state of MN. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been struggling since 2021 and none of my providers seem to know how to help. Thanks and prayers to everyone managing this odd and debilitating chronic illness. You aren’t alone!

Try Leo Galland in NY. It’s out of pocket, but he does telehealth. He has put a ton of information out on his website that is the best I have come across.
Jordan Vaughn at Medhelp in Alabama tests for microclots and also does telehealth. Both understand the drivers and vascular implications of covid.

Thank you so much! Super helpful. Obviously would love to use my insurance but all of the amazing docs like Galland for good reason don’t want to fight with insurance companies. Appreciate you throwing out these two names, ridge91!

I would recommend Dr Westmoreland in Apple Valley, MN. She is helping me and a few other Long COVID people. She consulted with a Long COVID specialist (whose practice is full) to find some potential treatments for us. I am much improved.

f.y.i., Dr Westmoreland is a concierge doctor so there is a fee you pay directly to her. I signed up for six months initially and have continued with her into my second year. Best thing with a concierge doc is that they have time to spend on your case. She does research independent of our appointments and also spends quite a bit of time with me at each appointment. I do not know if she does telehealth.

Thanks so much! There's a lot of free information from Dr. Galland online, including You Tube. So even if you have no access, geographical or monetary, to him, you can at least try his supplement protocol, which appears to include: pre- and probiotics, high polyphenol diet, vitamin D, resveratrol, curcumin, andrographis, coenzyme Q10, omega 3s. There may be more. Do be sure to buy from a reputable, well-vetted source. PS: Beware: Checking Yelp, I see that Dr. Galland gets as many one-star as five-star reviews. Unhappy patients say he's cold, disengaged and the office is mostly a money factory. His fees are exorbitant.

If dysautonomia (POTS or other types of orthostatic issues) are present, you could try to get in with a neurologist who specializes in autonomic disorders.

Although I don't have any specific recommendations, I'd like to urge caution.
I'm getting the impression that many "doctors", whether certified MDs or not, are jumping on the LC bandwagon for reasons that may have more to do with their bank accounts than for any specific expertise or rate of success in treating this illness.
Don't mean to sound cynical, but...there you have it!

Look for long Covid programs at your nearest major city hospital. Preferably affiliated with a university because they are plugged into the latest research. You could make an appointment request at Mayo and they will advise you where to begin based on your main symptoms. I just had my Mayo new patient phone screening and got a lot of good information.

You are absolutely not wrong. One of the MDs mentioned in this thread got back to me stating fees of $1800 for an initial 60 min session and $600 for 20 min follow up. Very sad to see provider take advantage of desperate people. Regardless, I really appreciate everyone who has responded to my post and has offered support. We’re all in this together! Sending lots of love to everyone.

Be aware that just about every specialty still are learning about long term affects. Unfortunately if they can't get to the bottom then you're shipped to another specialty.
I have suffered since 2-2022, even spent 2 weeks at Mayo and still left with an inconclusive diagnosis.
It's frustrating, depressing and sometimes you experience PTSD with all the gaslighting from physicians.
I would much rather a doctor tell me I don't know then to make me feel either crazy or unheard.
