Living Donor Kidney surgery next Tuesday: Any advice?

Posted by earlenes @earlenes, Jan 17, 2020

I’m scheduled for surgery next Tuesday in Jacksonville. Any words of advice, lessons learned, etc? I’m excited and just a little nervous. My emotions have been on high alert. I get choked up whenever I talk about it. The idea that my donation will potentially save someone’s life just fills my heart to bursting. I’m the start of a paired exchange chain of 7 transplants. Just WOW!

Thank you for your kind thoughts, Rosemary and Co! Yes! He is maintaining with a GFR of 13. The nephrologist last week asked him if he was ready to go on dialysis, and said “good answer” when my husband said No! Although he is bone shaking cold for about an hour a day, sweatshirts and heating blankets are a Godsend. As well as a heated massage chair. He is in good humour. And looking forward to an annual golf trip with 3 brothers and friends. He doesn’t dwell on the numbers, but continues to look ahead. Pre op screening is scheduled for Apr 1 at Mayo Scottsdale, and transplant day is scheduled for Apr 15. I send best wishes to all of you, recipients, donors and caregivers and thank all of you for sharing your journeys. Be well.

@tasher3433, I am thinking about you - a lot. How is your husband? And what are the plans regarding his scheduled transplant due to the coronavirus? Has it been rescheduled?
I want to introduce you to another member who is waiting for a kidney transplant. @melabel, I invite you to join in.

Hi Rosemary and Co! Thank you for reaching out. Mayo called at the beginning of the pandemic and postponed the upcoming surgery. Understandable but worrisome. To date, my husband’s GFR is at 12, falling slowly. He is very tired, but has a great attitude! No longer golfing, but walking the block. Mayo hoped to begin rescheduling in May. My heart is with all of you waiting for a new normal. Our daughter has quarantined us til this passes, so does the shopping, cleaning etc.we are well. You stay well, too!
