After transplant I have hair loss due to meds: Will it come back?

Posted by jtjourney @jtjourney, Jan 30, 2025

I had my liver transplant 7 months ago. Everything went wonderfully, however, I'm experiencing severe hair loss due to my anti-rejection meds. Will my hair come back? Is there anything folks have done to help with the hair loss? I'm taking Biotin for several months and it hasn't helped.

It took around 1 year for me to feel that my hair and finger nails had reached a satisfactory level.
I took biotin as directed by dermatologist, with transplant team approval. And I used gentle hair products that my hair dresser uses for her cancer patients.
My hair health has continued to improve over time! As I approach my 16th year with liver/kidney transplant, my hair is shiny natural silver (genetic and vitiligo) and my nails are clear, hard and healthy!

By chance do you have any specific recommendations? My mom had her liver transplant earlier this year in March and it hurts to see her having such a hard time with losing hair. She ordered some natural hair growth shampoo on amazon that is meant for all hair types so I hope it helps or becomes better over time. Let me know!

@elijunkk310, I would like to extend my welcome to you. I am happy to hear that your mom has received a liver transplant and is to the recovery stage that I remember happened to me, when I was feeling well enough to be concerned about my hair! I am fortunate to have a hair dresser who caters to cancer patients (hair care and custom wigs). She suggested that I use some of the gentle product (shampoo and conditionsr) that she recommends to her cancer partients. And then at my post transplant check-up, I was told that I could try Biotin, that it might help. But I was assured the my hair would come back in time - It did.

I assure you that your mom is not alone! Here is a link to more members talikng about hair loss:

Does your mom have a dermatologist? I would suggest that she ask the dermatologist or post transplant nurse about the product that she has ordered online.

Other than hair, How is your mom getting along with her recovery?

I had hair loss also after my liver transplant. It's quite normal. Talk to her doctors about Biotin. It does work, but also in time the hair loss will stop. Good luck with everything and God bless.

I am on tacromilis and had hair loss the first year and once in a while through the last six years. I tried a hair loss shampoo like you mentioned and I believe it works. I stopped using it for a bit and noticed some hair loss returned. I have very thick hair and I noticed I could see my scalp in some areas. I was surprised how much it bothered me. I had chemo over 12 years ago and lost all my hair - I guess I expected it then. When I lost hair from the tacromilis I kept asking my family and friends do you see my scalp ? They tried to be nice and said no but finally someone said yes. That honesty helped me figure out ways to address it. Here’s to recovery for all.
