Liver pre-transplant question

Posted by jodeej @jodeej, Mar 26, 2018

My husband has occasional issues with stomach upset resulting in diarrhea recently. Is this part of his liver issue or is it possibly something else? He went to to work today, but turned around and came right back home because of it. We do go back for his 3 month check-up the week of the 9th, so I can talk to the transplant team about it. I know his liver is really getting worse because his breath is starting to smell and his "brain fog" or cognition is getting worse.
Thanks,
JoDee

@jodeej I thought you said somewhere that his MELD was 36. I am not surprised that if it's 30 he has not yet been transplanted, particularly if he happens to be type O. I understand that type can take longer, probably because they can transplant those livers to anyone waiting, whereas type A. B, AB can only go to the same types.

@jerrydrennan, When my docs thought I might have bile duct cancer, I had to be inactivated from transplant list until a biopsy showed I was cancer free. Tests were negative, and I was able to be reactivated. Therefore, I am not familiar with the staging process, and I appreciate your explanation.

I do have a question for you - What does it mean to be 'passed over' as you have indicated?

The nurse coordinator has set me up twice to be staged. I was passed the first time the nurse said there where some other that needed to go before due to health issues. The second time was actually schedule and was canceled by the surgeon 3 weeks before the schedule . If I understand her right there was two many on the active list. Dr wanted to set up around sept. To October to stage me.
I was called on june22 and was told they want to stage me. They have had a lot of transplant done. That's a blessing. ( @lisamb) . I was also told it could be canceled when I go up there for my regular visit in July. I will not expect it to happen so maybe the pass will not be such a hard emotional drop.

@jerrydrennan, Thanks for the explanation. I know that the waiting and the unknowing are just plain awful, - however, at least you can take some comfort knowing that Mayo has a protocol based on years of experience. I hope that all continues to proceed favorably for you.
Sending prayers.
