Liver Donor Kidney - what happens to the Adrenal Glands
Would appreciate if anyone who has had a Live kidney donor transplant – would know if the Adrenal Gland of Donor was part of the transplant. Thanks

Adrenal Gland of Donor will NOT be removed
Thanks, Bala – reason for this question – there is a discussion that both my natives could be removed, I was hoping that Donor Kidney (being the right one) may have the adrenal gland too as the right kidney adrenal has both connections the artery & vein into the respective aortas.
Well if that happens – I probably will have to take medications that help with the Hormones
@l0lag0lag0b3 usually they try to keep your adrenals when both native kidneys are removed. Your living donor will keep theirs as well. I had a simultaneous bilateral nephrectomy and living donor transplant at Mayo 12/7/20 and the surgeon Dr Prieto, made sure to leave my adrenals.
@l0lag0lag0b3 also, it is my understanding that they typically take the donors left kidney and put it on the recipient’s right side, unless there is a specific reason to the opposite.
native kidneys are removed due to bleeding, cancer, incurable infections in PKD, excessive size in PKD, excessive protein in urine, and other reasons
irrespective of the reason, while removing the native kidneys, Adrenal Gland will never be removed
But, after kidney transplant, one needs to take Steroid tablets every day, which suppress the adrenal glands, which may shrink !!
Thanks Bala, as I can guess, shrinkage will be function of years + Qty of Steroids + overall health factors… & many more variables, (life style etc)
Any insight into the possible approx. average # of years ..
Yes Jennifer0726 typically the left kidney is taken from the donor, in my case – my wife's right Kidney was taken due to space issues/management for the transplanted kidney connectivity.
I was not sure first if this would impact her kidney performance, after 1st. year the left kidney is performance is normal.
@l0lag0lag0b3 not all who receive a kidney transplant have to be on steroids indefinitely. Mayo only had me on them only while I was in the hospital immediately after transplant. Ask your team, you might not need them long term. Best wishes
Yes jennifer0726 that's a good one to know about, currently in my understanding the only steroid I am taking is 5mg prednisone… I am not taking any other steroid that I know off.
@l0lag0lag0b3 my apologies, I thought from your post you hadn’t received a transplant yet. Are you on 5 mg prednisone now Post Transplant? Or did I miss that you had a different transplant like liver and now getting a living kidney transplant? Do you have PKD? I had my tx & kidneys out due to PKD.
