Let's Talk about Gardens

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Mar 31, 2020

Spring is on it's way and many of us are looking forward to some sunshine and warmer weather and being outdoors...and gardens!
Perhaps you look forward to digging in the fresh spring time soil as you prepare for a summer garden? Do you plant flowers? Do you plant vegetables?
Do you garden for enjoyment? Do you garden for health benefits? What do you want to share about your garden?

@rosemarya Hi! I've been missing from Mayo Clinic Connect for a while. Bad health lately.
Proud to say I've repotted one of my struggling little orchids, and have two more to go. Thanks to info from members here, I got orchid potting soil and specific orchid pots from Amazon, which made my task so much easier. Doing my little babies one at a time, since my stamina is not great this week.
Warm hello to all my mates! Laurie

Is there anything more cheerful than a bowl full of pansies??? And orange is such a perky "pick-me-up" color!

@rosemarya, @Erinmfs, @lioness @wyngnit, @fiesty76 and everyone...I, too, have the plumber coming for a quote and chat about finishing the redo of my bathrooms! Hopefully, in 2 days.....will finally get them finished. Been working on them for 100 years!

I have a couple boys coming to help me with planting a few border plants, rocky ropes?????, a light green in front of darker green leaf liriope. Used to always plant full beds of red/white mixed petunias or vincas or similar flowering plants, but can't do it anymore, or keep them looking good. So, these are perineal succulents and with mulching will look ok. Not great, but ok.

Also, having them repot pots and baskets for the patio and front. General cleaning up.....

Wish I could plant bulbs. Don't do well in sandy, hot Florida....I'm a bit jealous of you, @rosemarya, to have bulbs from your grandfather! That's special...

Well, enough for now. Blessings all. elizabeth

@ess77, My neighbor used to have a bed filled with red/white mixed petunias and they always brought smiles to all who saw them!

I'm new to planting succulents and can't remember the names of the three that have returned 2 yrs in a row but so glad to have them because of low maintenance required!

Glad you have helpers coming to add some border plants and to also repot your baskets and pots. Saw an article on Utube about how to "revitalize" older potting soil but was reading about dahlias and forgot to go back for that article. If I find it, I'll send along the tips. I usually just mix my older mix with new amendments and hope they add a bit of fluffiness to my hard clay garden soil.

I'm adding more and more bulbs to my beds because they return and can be used for diff. seasons. In FL, you probably have success with more of the tropical plants that just won't make it in my arid climate.

I have some bulbs from across the driveway. I was admiring their tenacity, not ready to bloom yet, but I can transplant some and fill in the gaps from the carnage of digging that big trench.

Yes! The beauty of bulbs is their tenacity!

FF 2nd Covid vacc, was dizzy from "making up postponed dr appt's" due to pandemic caution. With just one more doc to go next week, I’m spending much of each Spring day clearing, weeding, removing last yr's bark mulch, and digging.

Most newly installed 75 spring bulbs with markers have stopped their bloom along with returning tulips, daffies, and hyacinths.

Easter weekend I emptied and broke down a 40" wooden whiskey barrel that was beginning to rot at the bottom. Replaced it with a 30" and mixed old soil with new along with cow manure, compost, perlite and gypsum to use as new filler. Centered beautiful blue annual salvia with 4 surrounding ivy geraniums.and pleased with the look.

Cut back Eng. Ivy surrounding front tree and then took cuttings to root. Added new soil mix to one area of front courtyard and installed 36 purchased Eng. Ivy to area cleared earlier of mixed vinca and ivy.

Obssessed with gardening after a yr of no new plant purchases, layers of dust increase inside but I'm just giving them a nod as I grab an iced tea and head back outdoors.

A doz. Dahlia tubers installed along with Shasta daisies, geraniums, snaps and more strawberry plants. Lined one large back bed with white stones. Yay! To Spring, sunshine and life in the yard!

@ess77 Hi Elizabeth! Great to be back, if only a little bit for now! Thanks for your nice welcome.
My repotted orchid seems to like it's new bark, perlite and special orchid pot. Good luck if you start repotting yours today!
The new format for Connect seems awesome so far!
Happy repotting! Laur

I visited our botanical center recently, mourning the loss of my flowers to the plumbing work. It’s so beautiful there.
