Leg and Foot cramps.

Posted by danny5 @danny5, Feb 5 1:10am

wondering if there is anybody with this problem. i get muscle cramps in both legs and feet. but they are more frequent and worse in my right leg. from just below the knee. and into the foot. always at night, when i'm in bed. bad enough that the right foot twitches also.
i hope this is in the correct discussion post.

My experience with leg cramps is that they come and go irregularly and its completely coincidental if they stop when taking a supplement or altering behavior. They can be terrible and frequent and then disappear for months or years.

My right leg also bothers me most... I wonder if it relates to the right hand/leg being more dominant because I'm right handed.

I bought an adjustable base for my bed which comfortably keeps my legs elevated while sleeping. My issue is muscle spasticity/nerve pain from MS but the base might help you too. The elevation is very slight but it works. If its too high you'll know because your legs will get numb - that's what happened to me. I initially bought the base to relieve sinus congestion and figured out it helps my legs too. Funny how things work out.

I could not tolerate Gabapentin and I’m on no anti inflammatory meds at all. Had tried turmeric but it caused anemia which I’m correcting now. It certainly a crap shoot!

I've had muscle spasms in both legs for decades. I've been told they're due to numerous possibilities: I'm chronically dehydrated, have a malabsorption disorder and low potassium (eat a banana or 2), a lymphatic disorder (diagnosed with lipedema in 2023), and venous reflux in my legs. I also have adjustable base for my Sleep Number bed. Helps more for back than leg spasms. Spasms used to start in upper thigh and were excruciatingly painful. Any movement to get comfortable would cause the nerve synapses to jump from muscle to muscle so I couldn't even stand to walk it out. Pain is so bad it is difficult to relax my breathing and allow nerves & muscles to relax. Compression therapy, manual lymph drainage massage, venous ablation treatments and heating pad have helped reduce spasms so they no longer last for 30 minutes and jump from groin to ankles. Currently, spasms are more localized in legs, back or abdomen and episodes can subside in 15 minutes or so and not be so excruciatingly painful. However, spasms can now happen day or night and not just when I jerk out of a sleep paralysis episode at night. Good luck, many things can trigger. My best suggestion is to learn mindful breathing techniques that can relax you during the pain and keep a heating pad plugged in next to your bed. I also have an electric blanket placed UNDER my fitted sheet to keep legs warm (not as warm/hot as if covered on top by it).

I've had similar issues with my feet and lower legs; not sure if it's the very same, but similar enough that you might look into Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) supplements. I found taking 600mg 2x daily helped enormously.

Have you tried upping your magnesium?

Occasional cramps in leg(s) that I get are often seem to be alleviated with stretches of various leg muscles. While brisk walking for about half hr in 24 hrs is a good bet for me I also do a few stretches before going to bed. Even while sitting every now and then it's good to remind that foot has many joints and rotating -- from toes to around ankles -- invent Yours! -- all help. It's the general practice of keeping the whole body limber and strong that seems to have helped me pain and cramp free 80 y.o. self.
