Left Atrial Volume and B12 Deficiency/Low Haematocrit

Hi, I have been doing a bit of research post my last consult. Having been diagnosed with HCM 20 years ago. It's the first time I have had a good understanding of LA volume rather than just diameter. I have a normal LA dia but severely dilated LA at 55 ml and normal diastolic left ventricular function. The research I have seen links large LA by volume to high blood pressure, which I have never had but also deficiency in B12 and abnormal haematocrit so the abnormal levels of oxygenated blood leads to a requirement for more blood to be held/supplied in the atrium. I find this fascinating and can't wait to chat to my cardio about this. My Mum who I have inherited my condition from has also been B12 deficient with low haematocrit for as long as I can remember, my Sister doesn't have HCM but has had anaemia and my Grand Mother had pernicious anaemia. Just wondering whether any one else has discovered similar.

I have HOCM (became obstructive at the beginning of this year (2025)), and am taking Camzyos. This year a doctor found my B12 was low and recommended supplements. Because of your experience, I am now also wondering if there's a connection between the HOCM or the Camzyos and the B12 deficiency...

@jmr091805 I found this: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-vitamin-b12/art-20363663 (Google Mayo Clinic Vit 12 deficiency.) This may help you generate questions for your doctor to answer.

@walkinggirl thanks, doctors are clueless on nutritional deficiencies. I definitely believe there is a link, I've started supplementing. The threshold for B12 deficiency in the UK is far too low.
