I had a UTI that just wouldn't go away. I was on 3 different types of antibiotics for 29 days. I developed C-diff that took 2 months to treat. I was fortunate enough to find a gyno-urologist at Mayo who ran several diagnostics and saw that there was nothing structural going on. I was prescribed 50 mg of Macrobid one time daily for several months. I didn't want to take them that long. I started taking methenamine mandelate (Hiprex) 2 X daily along with 500 mg of Vitamin C which took care of recurrent UTI's. Hiprex is an anti-infective not an antibiotic and has been around a long time. Doctors are returning to this way of reducing bacteria load in the urinary tract and it works quite well.
I have mentioned before and have yesterday posted my UTI journey.
I have UTI a few times per year. Though I do follow all hygiene, diet, precaution, and recommendation , do take the different antibiotics , try supplements ,minerals and herbals (UVA-Ursi, D-mannnose, cranberry juice ) UTI still is reoccurring and bacteria became antibiotic resistance !!!
Went to Urology dr.
Without any discussion, he has scheduled the cystoscopy procedure, that I am very reluctant to do at my advance age .
But as it stays cystoscopy might help to reveal the UTI problem .
Besides, I am taking a hormone therapy Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer or other cancer reoccurrence. Tamoxifen is further depleting the estrogen, that usually helps to fight bacteria .
Now, I wander if any of member here have the procedure done ✅, how it went and how this helped to treat UTI??

Hi @dulcinea14 A recurring, or in your case, ongoing/chronic UTI is awful. My advice to you is to find another urologist. You’ve had this 2 months and that is not enough time to have explored all the options.
Sometimes the normal regimen of antibiotics don’t do the trick and a long term program needs to be in place.
Have you had a 5 day culture run to see what bacteria is involved? That can’t be determined with a rapid test and is even missed during 3 day cultures.
Have you had a cystoscope procedure to see inside your bladder and urinary tract or a CT scan or MRI to check in your kidneys?
Do you have a lot of pain in your back with this or a fever?

I’ve had cystoscope procedures, CT scan, pelvic ultrasound and all is OK. I changed from a Urologist to a urogynecologist and she has tried everything. Sent me to an Infectious dr also. Opinions— There is nothing they can do - I am antiobiotic Resistant to everything. No pain in back or fever, but vaginal pain is very bad, especially at night, plus urinating every hour. Feel miserable all the time.

It was awful but finally, after 3 urologists and an actual diagnosis, they nailed it. I was on antibiotics for a year but it worked! I truly hope your doctors will continue to pursue this situation for you.
I found some discussions on Connect with other members who also have Chronic UTIs and have shared their experiences as to what they’re going through, treatments and pain relief. I’ve posted links to the conversations below.

One other article that might have some merit is a paper in PubMed by the National Institute of Health. It discusses morganella morganii and possible treatment when it’s drug resistant. Most of the article won’t be related to you as it discusses systemic infections. However, down near the bottom where it says, Conclusion, it does mention drugs in a combination form that might work. Worth reading anyway.
To help with the discomfort, make sure you drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily. I know it seems counterintuitive but it really will help keep the bladder flushed and reduce the bacterial load. (Make sure the toilet bowl is cleaned with Chlorox or Lysol frequenly)
Have you tried any of the OTC drugs such as AZO, Cystex or Urinex to help calm some of the pain?

This may sound silly, so please take it for what it's worth. A male friend had recurring simple (but one sent him to the hospital) UTIs over two years, continually trying a different antibiotic with some, but not great, success. I told him that female friends with similar complaint swear by cranberry juice. He finally saw a top-notch urologist who ruled out anything serious and put him on D-mannose, the primary source for which is, well, cranberries. The D-mannose helps the biofilm lining of the urethra be less hospitable to the bacteria as UTI bacteria are notoriously 'sticky' and attach easily to the tissue. Another win for simple phytochemicals.
This man also swears by 25 years of drinking cranberry juice daily. I stock up on the juice because it keeps well and does not require refrigeration. This is my family's anecdote.
