Mayo shared that it was up to the donors family. We were permitted to write them a letter which Mayo would deliver but further contact would be up to the donors family. We sent a letter of thanks and included a hand written thank you from my grandkids and that was it. The donors family desired to remain anonymous which is totally understandable. Mayo may or may not still be able to, willing to, do the same for you 7 years out ? Best of luck.

6 Reactions@mollyd21 i sent a letter to my liver donors family while I was still hospitalized, encouraged by a social worker. I had no response and sent another letter to this family two years later with no response.
My first letter was very basic and said very little about me but I hoped to hear from them. My second letter was different- I explained that I too had experienced the sudden death of my husband before I was ill so I understood sudden loss. Ultimately I understood that it was more important for me to connect to my deceased donors family than it was for them. Everyone copes with grief differently. We do not know what our donors families are going through.

4 ReactionsI hope they are able to, even 7 years later. I was a living kidney donor about 3-1/2 years ago and I know I would be happy to hear from the recipient any time. I knew going in that I might not and accepted that. My sister received a deceased donor kidney and was so happy to hear from his family after a few months. What a gift they gave during their loss & grief.

3 ReactionsMy husband received a deceased donor kidney 10/1/2016. We wrote to his donor's family, but never heard back from them. We don't know the circumstances of their son's passing, but we do know he was 36 years old. We are grateful everyday for the opportunities he has now that he has been given a second chance. We understand the grief and emotional toll this can take on the donor's family.

3 Reactions@mollyd21, have you contacted your transplant social worker to find out if they are able to deliver a message from you to your donor family? Did you write a letter to be sent to the donor family through your transplant center at the time of transplant?
