Is anyone taking repatha

Posted by marxas @marxas, Jun 19, 2024

I have a 1900 calcium score no stents or bypass 50% blockages age 65. I’ve been on statins for 20 years. Just had heart angiogram . They want to now treat with repatha

@discernment i have just tried to inject my first dose. I am not able to get any fluid out. Went by instructions

What could be wrong?

@honeyholley1 I was new to self-injectors when I got Repatha, so I needed coaching from my spouse.
Please try the following:
Clean the area with alcohol and let dry.
Remove the orange cap that covers the needle.
Firmly grasp a "fold" of the sanitized area with one hand.
Hold the open end of the injector very firmly against the folded flesh. (Don't try to inject directly into your abdomen.)
Push down hard on the plunger end with your thumb ( you will hear an audible click) and hold in place until the injection finishes - about 15 seconds, but I never counted. There will be a second, softer click as the needle retracts.
Replace the orange cap & dispose of your injector per local instructions. If the doctor didn't provide a sharps container, you can ask for one.
Here is a You Tube video to show you how:

If this doesn't work, you can take the injector to the pharmacy for teaching by the pharmacist, or to your doctor's office for help from the shot nurse or tech.

If you know anyone who does self-injections, they can probably help you get started.

I had trouble with this. You need to push the needle end into your flesh really hard. I get my husband to help.

The skin must be tight otherwise the injection is difficult. I had trouble my first injection

I have been using the injections for almost 3 years and my brother for 8 years. Neither of us has and any side effects or problems with the injections. Three stents were put in my LAD artery 2.5 years ago and I need the low cholesterol and an anticoagulant. I think they are extending my life.

@loyd1957 Thank you so much for this input. I also have Hashimoto's, Sjogren's & PVC's already all the time. This doesn't sound like a helpful medication at all. Thank you again for the input.

@discernment I also have Hasimoto's and have experienced no side effects with Repatha. I am unable to take statins because they make my osteo arthritis much worse. I'm a data point of one, but I wouldn't discount Repatha because you have Hashimoto's based on one person's opinion. FYI, I am on a regular 25mcg of levothyroxine.

@honeyholley1 Make sure the injector is perpendicular to the area you are injecting. You need to pinch an area so you can get enough flesh to create a "mound" to offer resistance to the injector so it can press firmly into the flesh. It should "click" when the conditions are met. I've found that am unable to inject my thighs because I don't have enough fat to make a large enough pinch area. My belly area is much easier, and I alternate with the backs of my arms - my husband helps with those. Best of luck to you.

@ss52 Are these side effects you experienced from Repatha? Fortunately, I don't have those issues with it, but everyone is different.

I am unable to tolerate statins or Zetia with horrible side effects and I already have chronic pain. I got my first injection of the twice monthly Repatha 5 days ago and the side effects are awful and I won't take it again. What else is left that I can take - will consult with Cardiologist.
Many of us with chronic pain syndromes can't tolerate the medications that can help our Coronary Heart Disease because of increased musculoskeletal pain, and I wonder what other options are out there. My heart disease is from my bad genetics and my age (in my 70's) and I am unable to tolerate most medications with side effects. I already tried the supplement route and it is not enough as my heart calcium score is 196.
Good luck to you and I hope you can tolerate the Repatha and it improves your outcome.

I am 81 and have been on Rapatha since 3 stents were put in my LAD artery 3 years ago. I had been on other cholesterol meds for decades prior to that. My brother has been on Rapatha for about 8 years. It has been great for both of us. I wish I had been on it sooner to keep my cholesterol low enough to not be in the situation I am. We have no side effects that we know of.
