I need to know where to start getting my husband help

Posted by 4nichola @4nichola, 6 days ago

My husband has had 3 major brain injuries, sledding accident, car accident and fell off a roof. In addition he has had at least 5 concussions that I know of. He worked in construction until he was recently granted disability. He has started to have major issues with memory, coordination and anger. No one has been able to help, we have been referred to a psychiatrist. Is there a hospital in Florida he can be looked at?

Behavior changes, including anger, are common after head injuries. I believe the psychiatrist may well be able to help. After an accident, my husband's personality changed, and he became angry and very hard to live with. He say a psychiatrist, who had treated veterans in the past. After listening to my husband, he said he knew exactly what the issue was, and what to do to help him. He said the minor brain injury likely caused some very minor bleeds in my husband's brain - so small that they were not obviously noticeable. He started my husband on a small dose of antidepressants, and over the next couple of months my husband's personality became more normal. Hope this helps in some way.

Thank you for your story. I feel better just knowing there are other people going through this. My husband was taken completely off antidepressants because they were making his aggression much worse and now he is on antipsychotics only, he is doing better on that type of medication. The wrench in this is that his alcohol use is getting out of control worse, he has been in 3 alcohol rehabs in the past year. It seems the rehabs only have a cookie cutter program that doesn't get to the bottom of his issue. When he gets home he goes right back to dinking. I'm now looking at putting him in the Inpatient Substance Abuse Clinic at Mayo in Wisconsin with hope they could properly diagnose which medication direction we should go in.

I'm so sorry that your husband is having such terrible issues! That must be very hard for both of you! Since you were referred to a psychiatrist it might be a good place to start. Do you have a primary care doctor that you can also see? As far as finding a hospital in your area do a Google search and look up the reviews of whatever hospital comes up. Try and find one with good reviews that is fairly close to where you live since you may be going there often.

Prayer also helps. Just ask God for help for your husband. God made him and he can fix him. I'll say a prayer for both of you.
I wish you the best.

Firstly, thank you for sending prayers, yes, I stick closely to God and prayer it is definitely helping me to stay strong. There really aren't any doctors or hospitals close to us and the doctors that we do see dismiss CTE and go for strictly mental health and medications. The problem is the medication management is all over the place and he is getting worse all of the time, every doctor has their strong opinion and at the end of the day they blow everything off. We are going to go find the best place wherever it takes us. Thank you again and God Bless.
