I have just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

Posted by SJG @SJG, Oct 8, 2015

I have just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (1 1/2 inch mass in tail) which has mets to liver (multiple adenocarcenoma masses about the same size) was told today that surgical interventional not possible at this point. Next week I will probably start chemo with Folfirinox which is powerful combo medication. Any other people out there facing similar circumstances? Any one willing to share your experience with me? FYI I AM 54 male in excellent physical condition-health.

Hi @SJG Welcome to Connect.
It's always tough to find out that surgery is not possible. Folfirinox is a powerful drug combo, so hearing that you are in good physical condition is great. Will you be getting chemo every 2 weeks? Do you have good support around you at home?

Meeting with oncologist on Monday to discuss chemo and get schedule. Fortunately I have a great support system. Trying to add a few lbs before this starts.
@SJG Great to hear back from you so quickly. Maybe the recipes here will help inspire meals to put on a few pounds https://www.ellicsr.ca/en/clinics_programs/ellicsr_kitchen/Pages/recipe_archive.aspx They are recipes from the wellness program at a cancer center in Toronto.

It sure helps to have a great support system at home, but I understand the wish to connect with others who have been there. I hope someone will post here about their experience with Folfirinox.

Good luck with your meeting with the oncologist on Monday. Have you made a list of questions to ask?

Hi @SJG What did you learn at your appointment with the oncologist on Monday?

I start chemo on Tuesday (Folfirinox). Dr. Redman said the liver cancer is the biggest concern right now since there are 4/5 tumors in my liver. She is also going to send out my tumor sample to be genetically coded. Who are you Colleen?

Hi Colleen
I'm generally doing ok. I have had some tough side effects from the chemotherapy. But I am starting Round 2 of Folfirinox on Monday.
SJG, the chemo is rough, take it from someone who just finished treatment number 21. It has been 17 months since they found mine and since it had spread surgery is not an option. Expect to loose weight, be sensitive to cold, and want lots of sleep. Gas has been a problem for me...extremely painful! OTC gas relief helps. Good luck on your treatments and don't forget to thank someone for another day of life.
