Husband had Modified Bentall procedure at Mayo today.
Husband had surgery this morning … Aortic Valve replaced , Aortic Root Aneurysm replaced, and a ligation of the left atrial appendage. I didn’t know he was going to have a ligation.. found out in post op notes.. still haven’t spoken to surgeon ( my phone had an issue today … couldn’t make or receive calls )
He is in ICU currently and then will be in a regular room, total 5 to 7 days…
They were able to extubate him in OR before discharge to recovery… a blessing.
He is pretty intact cognitively, a relief , struggling with pain ( chest tubes) and nausea… they are do a good job keeping him his pain and nausea under control.
Tomorrow they will have him sit up in a chair , and will start PT.
His surgeon used plates to close sternum … hopefully will improve pain while healing.

Which Mayo Clinic was his surgery? I had a Bentall Procedure in Jacksonville Mayo on Sep 10, 2023 along with 3 other major procedures. They may have found the issue with the left atrial appendage once they were in there. It is good they were able to extubate him before he woke up. They had to wait until I was waking up after 27 hours and it was a living nightmare.
He is at Mayo in Phoenix.
I am OK that they addressed the left atrial appendage while he was opened up. He had an issue on the ECG day before surgery, perhaps that contributed to the decision.
I’m sorry you had the nightmare with intubation…
Thinking of you and your husband. Please keep us posted on his progress. ❤️
Thanks!
He is getting a blood transfusion today, low hemoglobin, otherwise pretty stable
Good news. I will keep you both in my thoughts.
