How would you approach this ?

Husband had his second colonoscopy first one was inconclusive
Dr is the call with results in 3 weeks
5 days after the colonoscopy I received a phone message wanting to know my husbands height and weight so the dr could send a referral to a GI dr … we have no clue as to why my husband would need to see a GI dr !!!
I did call the office the person answering the phone didn’t know as to why but stated she would get the dr to call us .. 24 hours and we haven’t heard back
Honestly it’s a bit concerning not to mention unethical
What would you advise?

Colonoscopies were both done by a surgeon not a GI dr
first was inconclusive because prep was not ideal
I did receive a call for the office after I made another call asking for clarification
Apparently there’s a polp where the original surgeon could not get to
Reason for colonoscopy age 72 and his mother had colon cancer in her 80’s
My husband refuses to sign up for any portal he doesn’t trust the internet lol
As mentioned in original post a phone consultation is set for 3 weeks after the colonoscopy to discuss results
this GI referral was a total surprise

Usually, a gastroenterologist is the person doing the colonoscopy so would know right away what was seen and what was biopsied during the procedure. Every time I have had a colonoscopy (I am in my mid 50s and have had 3 so far), my gastroenterologist came to me afterwards before getting dressed, to tell me what was found and next steps. My first was back in 2012 and this is what was done since then. I had a polyp removed and needed to go back every 5 years. They hand me a piece of paper also summarizing what the doctor did and what, if anything, was found.

What was the reason your husband had a colonoscopy, how old is he, what type of doctor did the procedure and where was it done? Usually, you see a gastroenterologist before having a colonoscopy for evaluation. I also saw a gastroenterologist due to stomach issues and they did an exam, sent me for bloodwork and ultrasound before moving to endoscopy and HIDA scan of gallbladder function.

I am the guy that had the colonoscopy, 3 polyps gone for examination, should have results in a couple of weeks.

It is great you had those 3 polyps found and removed. My son’s dad had the same last year (3 removed) and luckily had them come back benign. I had one polyp found in my early 40s and glad it was removed because I have a family history of colon cancer and many other cancers.

My hope is you get your pathology results quickly so you don’t need to wait and worry too long. My hope is also that they are benign and found early enough before any abnormal changes.

This is the problem with portals in medicine. Their end ASSUMES the pt is getting the lab path report, the lab path thinks the DOC got it, the DOC thought either the NURSE and or the PATIENT already got the news, the patient assumes the doctor and nurse are doing their job, the DOC and NURSE assume the computer geeks who convinced them the PORTAL is the best thing since sliced bread...and the list goes on.

ULTIMATELY it is the licensed personnel, ending with THE DOCTOR who are responsible for the patient. HE gets the BIG bucks for BIG responsibility.

The system has made an ASS out of your DOC because HE failed to cover his ASSumptions. Call the doctor, the administrator of his business. I suggest you do it in WRITING - stamped envelop. HE is causing patient harm in TWO ways; if the worst happens, sue them for suffering.

Unbelievably your description is nearly to the letter, the same as my result, waiting period, and inconclusive results on the first colonoscopy due to a prep that was less than perfect. I am now waiting for the results from the Dr. that preformed the colonoscopy. So far my family Dr. was able to tell me about 3 polyps and that they are out for cancer screening.
BTW I am a 72 yr. old male.

I’m due for a colonoscopy in a few weeks, I had my last one almost five years ago, they schedule you every three years if they find polyps, even benign ones. I’ve been having terrible pain and other symptoms in my bowels and onward to the colon so I’m nervous, I sometimes feel that they should do colonoscopies more frequently but I don’t think our government will pay for that.

I'm sure the call after the second colonoscopy was a surprise - I too was surprised that the surgeon did the colonoscopy, but I do know some protocols are different in Canada - especially in areas where docs in some specialties may be scarce.

Now that a few days have passed, did you get a call back explaining why he was referred? Have you been able to set up an appointment with the GI doc, or perhaps move up the phone consult to get some answers?

HHow is your husband handling all of this?
