how to take antibiotics?

Posted by norah @norah, Oct 22, 2018

this is my second time taking the big three antibiotics ,last time was 2015 when i also had lung surgery (left upper lobe) for cavities caused by Mac. Anyway last time i took my antibiotics before bed which worked well . Now the nurse said better to take 2 in the morning and strong Rifampin in the evening . Starting today so i’m curious friends how you take them . Also does it really matter much if you take them with or without food ? Your input would be greatly appreciated . thank you ,norah

@suzyqueue

I watched the video and it does help tremendously. However, the dose of Rifabutin I'm on says "1 capsule twice a day". In the video the Dr says to take it before bedtime. Does it matter if I took both at the same time as she suggested???

I would suggest you check with your Dr, explaining and/or sharing the video and NJH Dr's info on taking meds

@norah Hi Norah! Welcome to our group. I am so glad that you found us. I see that Heather has given you a suggestion already on how to take your meds. I have had many patients state that taking the rifampin on an empty stomach helped a great deal. I suppose it could be morning or night. Some people take it first thing in the morning before eating, then wait an hour before eating. Everyone seems to try different schedules until they figure out what is best for them. I have a tip for you to better access info on this site. If you scholl to the top of this page, you will see a little magnifying glass icon. Click on that and then enter a word or two on something you would like to know about. i.e. type in 'rifampin' and all posts where they talk about that subject should pop up. Try it and let me know if it worked for you.

Am trying to reply to someone suggesting I take rifampin without good - was doing that . My doctor has taken me off; have a number of complications- will probably go onclomasafine-spelled that wrong I think.

Good suggestion about checking in with your doctor . My last round of antibiotics I took them all at night probably two or three hours after eating. I feel the most important thing Is Taking The Antibiotics and whatever works best for my schedule and my body is what i must follow . I would be more likely to forget to take them doing it twice a day. So.....
I was on infusions also three times a week .

I had almost 4 years mac free and had so much energy and felt so alive . It was all worth it . I met a wonderful partner and had the enthusiasm to write 3 new books ,took an amazing road trip across the US and Canada , also went on a couple of long sailing trips and i’m 63 no spring chicken 😂.

None of this would be possible if it was not for the antibiotics
Before i was diagnosed i could hardly get out of bed and had a persistent cough i really thought i was dying .
So now when i take the big three I take them with so much gratitude .

The Big Three and the surgery gave me back my life . For those of you who are struggling -
