How to reduce my events while using my Cpap

Posted by alan bruce @alanbruce, Feb 25, 2019

I track my events, usage, seal and total score daily on Myair which is a Resmed product. I have used a Cpap machine for about 6 months and have had good success however my events seem stay below 5 for a few days and then jumps up to 8 or 9 for a day and then goes back to below 5.. It seems to be a regular pattern however I have not been able to determine why my events go up. Any suggestions are ideas on how to reduce my events would be great.

@gramps

Sorry, I meant that most of my events are clear airway. Not something that CPAP can remedy....

Sorry, now I understand your question better. I did find some information but it's not much and maybe you've already seen it - Clear Airway Apnea Events: https://singularsleep.com/blogs/news/clear-airway-apnea-events

Thanks John. Seems the only treatment is AVS machine. Not sure it's even available in my end of the woods....

Sorry again, I meant Adaptive support ventilation (ASV)

I find the comments here interesting and I can identify with a lot of them. I am new to the CPAP OR BIPAP world. I have been on BiPAP for going on 2 months now. I have found that my events have improved greatly after solving the leaky mask issue which just involved finding the right mask for me and then getting used to wearing it. I now find that my events per hour have improved greatly. I was initially at 25 the 30 events per hour. I find that most nights now I am in the range of 0,2 to 5.0 events per hour. Every once in a while, however, I jump up to 12 - 15 events per hour. Last nights was a good example; I had 12.5 events/hour. I had been to an event and was extremely tired and my legs were unusually painful from my back issues. I could not find a comfortable position on my side which is how I usually sleep. I ended up sleeping on my back. I actually woke myself up several times and was breathing very deeply which is normal for me when recovering or reacting to an apneic event. I remember thinking that I am probably going to have a high event number tonight. I was correct as it was 12.5. I think, for me, that I have confirmed that sleeping on my back may well be the culprit for me in raising my events per hour number. I will pay close attention in further evaluating going forward. Have a good sleep!! Lyle

Hi Lyle @papazig, Welcome to Connect. You are doing great for just going on 2 months of use of the BiPAP. You are spot on, the mask is what really helps once you find one that fits, is comfortable and has a good seal. I sleep mostly on my sides and some on my back when the sides start hurting and I can't get comfortable. I always had issues with the hose getting in the way until I found a hose stand that holds it above my head and out of the way if I have to turn to either side. The hose stand base just fits under the mattress and has a little loop at the top that holds the hose off of the bed and your pillow.

What brand of BiPAP machine do you have if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks for the comment. I am using ResMed AirCurve BiPapa. I use the Dreamware full face mask with the hose connection on the top of my head so the hose stays out of my way for the most part. Thanks for asking.

I have been using CPAP for three months now and have been monitoring my data on MyAir. Out of curiosity, I plotted my number of events vs. the air leak. I noted there is a correlation between the leak and number of events: The higher the leak the lower was my number events. Can anyone explain if this is a coincidence or if there is a scientific reason behind it?

Hello @nourai, Welcome to Connect, an online community where patients and caregivers share their experiences, find support and exchange information with others. I'm sure ResMed has some kind of algorithm that explains it but I really don't like their app compared to the one I had for my Philips Respironics Dreamstation which I had to replace due to the latest recall. I love my new ResMed AirMini and my events per hour are less that what I was getting for my Dreamstation. The problem I'm having is with the mask seal which I really don't believe is that important which is just my non-medical opinion. I think it might be a good question to pose to your sleep medicine doctor which I am going to do at some time. I use a cloth comfort cover on my mask and it's normal for some air leak. I also tried my mask without the comfort cover and it was waking me up when the pressure got too high. It would lift the mask off of my face. I'm just happy the events are staying below 4 for me which is what my doctor wants.

What type of mask do you use?
