How did you know? Aphasia

Posted by decarlo7 @decarlo7, Jul 4, 2018

So I googled trouble recalling words and Aphasia popped up all over. I have migraines pretty severe. I get the botox and the trigger injections. They work somewhat...
I truly believe my migraines are related to either being hit in the front of my head with a baseball bat as a child or hormone imbalance. I've brought this up to my neurologist. He gave me a few works to repeat back which I did no problem. So he just relates it to being busy.
Your thoughts?

I have mild aphasia. Sometimes I know what the word starts with and sometimes I don't. When I'm well rested I can sometimes think of the word in about 3 seconds to a few minutes. Sometimes I can't think of it and have to ask someone. I'm getting better at talking around the word.
My MRI showed several places on both sides of my brain had atherosclerosis that cut off blood flow and killed that part of my brain. I also lost the ability to see patterns in objects or numbers. My balance has suffered too.
The neurologist said for me to learn a foreign language, take a full aspirin a day and do crossword puzzles. I couldn't afford the foreign language lessons and the crosswords didn't help. The aspirin has seemed to help with preventing further damage.
I know others have so much more trouble but it is frustrating even on a mild level. I used to be a writer and not having the right words anymore put a big The End to that.

Hello @johnnyis and welcome to Mayo Connect,

I am sorry to hear about these concerning symptoms. It might be a good idea to consult with a neurologist. Given your symptoms, a full neurological work-up might be in order.

A neurologist will probably order some tests that will be more sophisticated than what the ER could do. Have you had any other symptoms such as vision changes, problems with walking, balance, etc.?

Hi, @johnnyis - I moved your post here so you can connect with others in this discussion on aphasia. If you would click on VIEW & REPLY in your email notification, it will take you right to this discussion, and you can look at previous posts, if you'd like.

Is this your daughter who is having the aphasia? Are you seeing more trouble understanding others' speech or trouble finding the words she wants?

@decarlo7, while you passed the word test that you did with the neurologist, do you find yourself having trouble recalling words in general?

Are you concerned that the trouble with words and migraines are related to a larger issue?

Hi Colleen. Thanks for these other links. My vision impairment makes it near impossible to SEE if one group might help more.

I apologize if I’m posting in the wrong place. This blindness that I’m dealing with effects way more things than I actually know.
My brain is not functioning as it once was. That said, it’s really difficult re-membering the things that I really should have an accurate list of things that are not right and to be accurate about the time line. It crosses my mind that doctors are exhibiting doubt and difficulty following the data that at times I’ve kept a record of in a specific way with dates times and events that was happening because it occurred to me that something might be learned if my notes were detailed.
Ironically the more detailed my notes are the more resistant the doctors become.
I’m overwhelmed now because I’m expieriencing a connection between my Vison problem and my ability to recall words and actions..
it all comes together as stress depression and disorientation.
