Hormone therapy and depression

Hi
I am post-menopausal and completed surgery and then 20 doses of radiation in December 2025 (for high grade stage 1 IDC and DCIS). That all went reasonably well. I’ve been on Tamoxifen for a few months (worked my way slowly up to 20 mg) and have noticed worsening depression for the last few weeks. It is not because of or in reaction to having had cancer. I am prone to depression and I believe it is related to the medication. My question is whether any of the AIs (which my doctor prefers I take, anyway) have better profiles in terms of depression risk. I’m guessing not, but am curious about others’ experience with this issue. I would really, really like to avoid starting an antidepressant. Thank you for any advice.

@sarahmh Thank you for the extensive reply. It sounds like you’ve been through it! I’m sorry you had to suffer so long with depression. It is so easy for medical professionals to either dismiss it or want to medicate it away without looking at what might be contributing.
When I’ve done a quick search now about the link between hormone blocking therapy and depression the studies seem to indicate a low percentage (1-17% reported depression on Tam) but they go on to say that it’s hard to say if it’s the medication or a reaction to cancer. That may be the case for some women; not me. And, as you point out, even if a side effect is uncommon, that doesn’t make it unreal. I’m doing a little medication experiment (cut back to 10 mg) for a couple of weeks before my oncology appointment to see if it makes a difference. I’ll have to look into Exemestane as an option, too. I don’t think it would be the next step typically.
Anyway, thank you for your honesty in sharing your story.

I am on Exemestane and have little to no side effects, I also drink PROPEL water supplement with electrolytes. I didn't go on Letrozole because many people on these threads complained about all the side effects and switched to other drugs. The PROPEL is my chaser to all lunches.

I take Exemestane in the afternoon, as I am busier and don't have to think about taking another drug to fight the BIGT C . Also started Herceptin July 1st that has been great. Already been through chemo.
Good luck and do your own research you know your body better than anyone!!
