High resting heart rate averaging 100 bpm
Does anyone use an Apple Watch or Fitbit to monitor their heart rate on a continuous basis? If so, it is useful and accurate? I just began to realize I have a common resting heart rate of at least 100 BPM and unless I drink tons of water, it will not drop except to the low 80's for a short time. My doctor wants to see the effect of cutting my BP medication in half. Just thinking that if I have a food allergy or some other factor, I can uncover something that may be causing this relatively sudden continuous heart rate increase. TIA.

@gloaming I have read the metoprolol might be an option. I'll see what my PCP says or maybe this will go all the way to my cardiologist. I do not hit 100 BPM often except for first this after waking up, In the past, I'd been on this medication for BP and yet it did not lower my BP. I took BP readings for months and months and it averaged no difference, I take losartan now, and my PCP cut the dosage in half to see the effect.
@laughlin1947 When a body awakens after sleep, both cortisol and glucose levels climb. It's part of the, 'Holy cow, I have a full day ahead of me!' natural response. They can elevate HR, although I am not aware of reports or anecdotes that say it's quite reasonable to expect HR in the 100-110 range as a result of merely waking.
It’s common for resting heart rate to be higher in the morning because of less blood volume upon waking. During the day one is ingesting fluids. At night if you’re sleeping, you’ll wake up slightly dehydrated at best. I have low blood pressure to begin with, so the heart is beating faster to maintain BP. Keeping VERY well hydrated the day before has helped me lower my resting heart rate upon awakening I will now drink a cup of water at bedside first thing in the morning, and then immediately come downstairs and drink a 16 oz glass of water with an electrolyte tablet in it. I will drink an additional 16 oz of fluid before my morning exercise. It can be a challenge, but overall my heart appreciates the extra hydration.

1 Reaction@psyche I've seen those exact results in BPM after I just wake up. Then the HR drops about 10 beats from there for the rest of the day. Yet, other times will show mid-day peaks well over 100. Need to find the cause of those incidents.
@psyche Yes, that's a huge amount of fluid, I can't do that much. I can do maybe 26 ounces by 10 AM.
@bohaiboy Thanks for your reply. I have the somewhat opposite need - that is, to lower my BPMs so I don't get scared like crap when I wake up and check my BPM and it comes out 110 or so after just sleeping a few hours. That worries me a lot. Maybe I need to go back on a low dose of metoprolol.
My sister was on metoprolol for a while and she suspected there was something that wasn't right. Turns out she had a low level allergic reaction to something in it and suffered from Afib until she stopped taking it.
You mentioned that you don't have Afib, but one benefit of the Apple Watch would be to use the ECG app to verify that and to see what it might otherwise report. The Kardia device that others have referred to will report several types of arrhythmias if you subscribe to their premium service.
Apple watch or FitBit work well for monitoring your HR on a continuous basis. What you would really like to see is a dip at night, your resting heart rate should definitely go down compared to your wake state. Then watch how much variance you get there. It's a good metric to watch for wellness and fitness. If you are stressed or starting to come down with something, your resting heart rate will go up. But it's a much steadier and more meaningful number than your HR at any random time during the day.
I have a Google Pixel watch, and it will continuously keep track of HR too. It has an ECG feature, but keep in mind these are one lead ECG on watches and can get a lot of artifact in their reading too. Sometimes the watch ECG's cause more anxiety that needed.
