High Levels of Vitamin B12 and Ferritin: Any pointers?

Posted by cocoa @annieecruz, Apr 29, 2018

What type of doctor handles test like the MMA Urine test and the HoloTC? Test related to how your body breaks down/absorbs and transport/bonds B12? My B12 test came back extremely abnormal.

How is your lab results after stopping take vitamin B12? Is your B12 normal now? How long take it become normal after stopped B12 vitamin. My daughter took multivitamin all the time. It is 500% DV the one she took. Her B12 Level is also high, and all other blood works are normal. Please let me know how long it takes for it to be back to normal. Thanks

High B12 but other tests normal
Hello!

I am 9 months postpartum. I went to the doctor to get my labs checked and everything was normal (CBC, normal Ferritin, normal vitamin D level, thyroid screen) except for my vitamin b12 level. My vitamin b12 level is >2000 (normal range is 211-911). This is my first time getting this test done so I’m a little bit concerned. I would like to note that I was taking a postpartum mood support supplement with 28mcg of vitamin b12z Has anyone experienced this? If so, what is the remedy or what was your experience like?

Welcome @messysilly. I moved your question about High B12 levels when all other values of your blood test show normal ranges to this existing discussion:

Have you discussed discontinuing the b12 supplement with your doctor?

I am so glad to have found this forum. For the past 3 years my B12 has been rising. In July 2020 my count was already pretty high at >1500. In August 2021 my count was >2000, and my most recent just this week February 2023 my count was >3600. I have been experiencing a variety of symptoms which has led me to various specialists. The most recent a neurologist. The neurologist ordered several labs. Some other flags that showed were low RBC, low Gamma Glob, low Total Protein Serum, low MPV, Low Calcium, low Uric Acid, and high BUN/Creat. Nothing has ever been said to me about my High B12. I have been diagnosed with celiac and typically have a deficiency and my levels prior to 2020 have shown on the low end of normal. There was a time several years ago I was deficient and had to do injections. I am also surprised I have low protein. I eat a very high protein diet. Keep in mind I have not taken any B12 supplements since doing injections approximately 10 years ago. Every specialist continues to just want to throw me on medication to "try and see if it helps". the symptoms. I don't want to take a medication for an unknown diagnosis.

I can answer about the high B12 as I have a similar situation right now. Elevated B12 in blood can indicate a potential problem with the liver or kidneys, undiagnosed diabetes, or another blood disorder. You are asked to stop all B12 containing supplements for a time to determine whether the high reading is from supplements or your body. 6 months is the typical time to stop supplements.

As for the high iron, John is correct, and those supplements can linger in the fat of the liver for a long time, so supplements must be stopped usually for 6 months to determine what your body is doing.

Eating a healthy diet will provide enough iron and B12 to keep you healthy unles you have some form of anemia. Were the supplements prescribed for you to treat a deficiency?

Hi Sue, I have elevated b12 without taking supplements, kidney & liver test were all normal. All blood test are Normal, just have high Cholesterol & high b12. In the past was diagnosed with pernicious anemia. But all is normal in blood tests. I have high bp, difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Also have severe chronic constipation, ( no b.m. Without laxatives) rectocele and fibroids.
I am very fatigued and have significant memory problems and brain fog. Also get numbness in feet or hands in certain positions. I know, it’s a lot!

Hello, It has been a while since I have posted but here's the latest.
My elevated B12 was recognized in October of 2021 (4072)
After 10 months of consciously not consuming eggs, checked again in August of 2022 (6066)
With no answers, 30 days later my PCP sent me to Hematology in September 2022 (7345)
I was reassured that there was no consequence so I went on with life. Another 8 months go by and I'm at my annual check-up, my PCP and I decide to check again in April 2023 (19,162)!!!

I'm on my to hematology and Oncology ASAP.

Hi @rubyjag3, goodness! That’s a significant jump in serum B12 so I’m glad to see you’re having this checked out further. It’s always better to be safe and proactive. ☺️ Let me know what you find out, ok?

In June of last year, my PCP had my B-12 level checked for some reason. When it came back at the low end of normal (around 200), he wanted me on weekly injections. II had to call it quits after the first injection as it made me so hyper that driving was dangerous. Supplements had the same effect. After a break, I tried again but only taking half of the recommended supplement, That I could tolerate. In Feb of this year, he had my level checked again fully expecting to put me on the injections. I fooled him as my level had increased to >1504. Needless to say I stopped taking the supplements which had the benefit of eliminating or significantly reducing recent symptoms I had not associated with the B-12 (light headedness, tingling in my feet, and one that could have indicated colon cancer). I will have my level checked again next month when having blood drawn for my cll (grade 0) appointment. Any insight to offer?

I have read all the comments in this thread to hoping someone provided the answer I am looking for. Nope. My B-12 level was reported as >1504 (test repeated to confirm). I can understand that different labs may have slightly different levels for the upper value. However, I saw levels of 6066, 7345, 4072, >3600, and 19162 mentioned. Was a non-standard blood test run? If so, what was it?

I posted about this a month or so ago but have had no luck getting any information. My B12 has been elevated for a couple of years (no, I don't take any supplements). Last October it was a little over 4000, now it is a little over 6000. All other blood work is good. The development that has me worried is excruciating lower back pain. I thought it was muscular or maybe I had irritated my arthritis but this feels more like an organ than bone or muscle. So far, doctors have dismissed the B12 numbers as "nothing to be worried about" help!

Hello, reaching out to see if you've had any luck with understanding your elevated B12 levels.

About 6 months back my dermatologist asked me to have a bunch of tests due to excessive hairfall and while everything else was normal, my B12 was very high. I repeated the test last week and it's at the same level - around 1560. My doc too shrugged it off saying it's nothing to worry about.

Everything on Google points this out to be something to be explored. I intend to repeat the test again in 4 months or so.
