Treating Osteoporosis: What works for you?

Posted by heritage1955 @heritage1955, Apr 1, 2016

Hi. I'm new to the site and am interested in treating osteoperosis. I'm 39 yo and recently had a bone density that showed I'm at -2.4. So, going through the intial "I can't believe it" stuff. 🙂

I agree with you. I stopped Prolia because of 9 hemorrhagic UTIs in one year. My doctor also told me you can’t stop… 3 years later I am doing ok with bone density scores about the same - Algae Cal and Strontium supplements, weight bearing exercise every morning and walking 5 days a week. All these drugs have terrible side effects.

To clarify, on the Algae Cal and Strontium your bone density scores are no better and no worse 3 years later?

My spine scores cannot be evaluated due to severe scoliosis. My right hip improved considerably and left hip declined slightly. No fractures. Only doing weight bearing exercise, walking, and AlgaeCal and Strontium. No other meds.

What is the Algae Cal and Strontium

Google it…a plant based calcium supplement. Strontium is another supplement to boost absorption of calcium.

I have never heard that strontium boosts absorption of calcium. I thought it interfered with calcium, actually. Can you provide a source? Thanks!

I just looked up the interaction with calcium and they do compete: strontium lowers absorption of calcium though this is possibly reversed with high dose Vitamin D. The combo of the two in supplements is based on the idea that noone will be able to follow the schedule that separates the two adequately, but they really need to be taken separately.

Hi Kaye, I also have severe osteoporosis - T score of =3.7 lumbar spine, -3.1 proximal femur. Prolia can have some nasty side effects and I would prefer not to take it. Thanks for those percentages of risk of fracture. I had not heard. It works, for those who tolerate it, but then when you stop bone fractures are even higher in the first few months. Such a conundrum.

I have -4.9 in all areas . I was on prolia and didn’t have any side effects. However,I couldn’t get my insurance to approve my prolia . So I didn’t have it for 2.5 months . During rush time period , I had 3 fractures for no reason . I believe it’s because I missed the dosing . Also I started eventie.

If you go beyond 7 months between Prolia injections, you are at risk for fractures. Everyone should be made aware of this by their doctors. (Insurance companies must know this. In Cda so don't deal with this). Amgen has warning on Prolia box. I needed a dental extraction so permitted to wait 7 months btwn extractions. So sorry to hear about your fractures.

Good evening Kathy, @feb. I think you mean Evenity. It is produced by the same company as Prolia, Amgen. Evenity is the newest of the osteoporosis medications and the only one that both builds bone and protects it. If you place the work Evenity in the search bar on the top of the page and then press the magnifying glass at the end, you will be taken to all of the posts that include the word Evenity. Since it is new, I think you will find quite a few discussions and some feedback from new users.

Please come back to me if you have additional questions or get lost.....that can happen on this site, especially to me.

May you be safe, protected and free from inner and outer harm.
Chris
