Heart Rhythm Conditions – Welcome to the group

Welcome to the Heart Rhythm Conditions group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
Did you know that the average heart beats 100,000 times a day? Millions of people live with heart rhythm problems (heart arrhythmias) which occur when the electrical impulses that coordinate heartbeats don't work properly. Let's connect with each other; we can share stories and learn about coping with the challenges, and living well with abnormal heart rhythms. I invite you to follow the group. Simply click the +FOLLOW icon on the group landing page.

I'm Kanaaz (@kanaazpereira), and I'm the moderator of this group. When you post to this group, chances are you'll also be greeted by volunteer patient Mentors and fellow members. Learn more about Moderators and Mentors on Connect.

Let's chat. Why not start by introducing yourself?

Welcome to Connect, @wj123456. I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but I would agree with @balubeje and @twptrustrek – if you are able to, I'd encourage you to get a second opinion.

Multaq (dronedarone) is an antiarrythmic drug used to treat atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, types of abnormal heart rhythms. I'm tagging @karenatmayo @cabgx6maze517 @vivian88 @surfin232, as they've written about Multaq, and may have some more information and insights for you.

According to this information from Mayo Clinic, https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/dronedarone-oral-route/side-effects/drg-20073151, some of the more common side effects of Multaq are indeed diarrhea and lack or loss of strength.

@wj123456, is this the first time you noticed a change in your blood pressure? How long have you been on Multaq?

Hello @chrissi, and welcome to Connect. Could you share a few more details? How long have you had your symptoms? How are you you managing the irregular heart beats? Have you noticed a pattern or any triggers that could perhaps cause the fast beats?

Hello I’m glad I found this group. I’ve been surfering with irregular beats, extra beats and fast beats. Drs’s don’t take me serious

Hi and welcome to the group. My suggestion is to change doctors. You may have caught him/her on a bad day that being said I would think you would want a doctor you feel hears you and it doesn't sound to me on this particular visit they were listening.

I am new to group. Went to doctor last week feeling really bad.My blood pressure was 80 over 60. He did not seem concerned at all and asked to have my blood pressure changed and also was any other medicine I could take for my a fib because it makes me feel so tired not enough energy to do much anything. He seemed really annoyed with me and told me that was not a side effect with that med. Don’t know what I should do I have been seeing him for 5 yrs and the first time to complain I take multaq

I\'m Judith, age 72 with a birthday coming this spring. I have bradycardia (slow heart rate), which can get down to 38 bpm, and supraventricular tachycardia, known as SVT. But the SVT is intermittent and occasional, although it used to happen more often. It is most likely to happen with stress or exertion. Also have Grade II diastolic dysfunction, which translates to symptomatic heart failure, but doing relatively OK so far.

Hello @miamom,

I am so happy that you posted here on Connect. I am Teresa, a volunteer mentor, and I've also had some heart problems both with heart rate, and valve issues so I do understand how uncertainty about a diagnosis can make everything worse! I applaud you for seeking out information - here at Connect we encourage everyone to be their own advocate for good health care. We also encourage second opinions when needed.

How far do you live from a larger medical facility? Is it within reason to drive so that you can put your mind at ease regarding this?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Teresa

@miamom I am happy to hear that you are thinking about getting a second opinion - always a good idea! I am also glad to hear that you are feeling more at ease with, as you say your, "out of nowhere" situation. It does take a while to adjust to a new medical condition.

I would enjoy hearing from you again. If you get a second opinion, will you let me know how that goes?

Teresa
