Have AFIB and have blood in urine.

Posted by amu45sin @amu45sin, Dec 30, 2024

I have AFIB and take dabigatran 120 mg, amiodorone 200 mg, metroprolol 12 mg, and atorvastatin 40 mg.
I have blood in my urine 80 % of the time. Usually about 1/4 ounce to about 1/2 ounce.
I am 79 years old and told my doctor and another health consultant, but bith of them just shrugged it off.
Any comments?

I don't know anything about you other than what you report. I believe your dose of amiodarone is reasonable for a maintenance dose, going by my own very short term exposure to the drug (a total of 8 weeks). I also take 40 mg of atorvastatin daily, and no problems there. I had not heard of dabigatran, but it is a form of blood thinner, according to my very quick search.

Amiodarone is a toxic drug over time, but it's considered safe for long periods with monitoring. Have you been monitored for toxicity?

Some people do well on one drug of a type, but are sensitive to others of that same type of drug. Perhaps you are not doing well, maybe your kidneys aren't (?) on the dabigatran....? There are other daily oral anti-coagulants...maybe you have already tried them and they didn't agree with you...not sure.

Since you are concerned about the blood, and your care givers are not, would it hurt to seek a third or fourth opinion. A nephrologist might want to take a look at your kidney chemistry to see if you should stop something or begin taking something. It's worth a shot, no?

My mother always had blood in urine but it was assumed by doctors to indicate some irritation. But it sounds like you have more than trace amounts. Could it be gynecological? Hope you get a doctor who listens to you!

Hi
Blood in your urine.
It can be caused by muscular exercise, kidney or urine infection.
Or could be your PRADAXA although I take 110mg x twice day for 5 years no problems and through operations, teeth out etc. Ops I stop for 3 x 24 hr days.
I trust you have had blood tests.
I would be inclined to reduce the statin. It can interfere with other meds.
It interferes with my thyroxine. I have no thyroid because of papillary cancer.
When urologist tested my urine a day after a bowling competitive day, he said I had blood in urine. He asked me what I had done the day prior. I explained. He said that's why. I also papillary cancer developing and did not know.
Take care. Why are you taking so much the a.................?

Thanks for your comments and info.
I have a message in to my primary care doctor for a consultation.
I am concerned about a kidney or stomach problem.
I take 200 amiodorone per day, as that is what the cardiac doctor prescribed.
I hope your health conditions improve for you!

I take Metoprolol and Flecainide 2 times a day.
I was diagnosed at 45, I am now 53 so very young.
I've not heard of blood in the urine with this condition.
If your not happy with your cardiologist, you have a choice to see someone else if that would make you feel better.
