Hashimotos Disease?

Posted by lluth412 @lluth412, May 23, 2025

Hi all,

I am normally in the lung health group as I have CEP, a rare lung disease caused by eosinophils. I also have adult onset asthma and sinusitis. I saw a functional medicine Dr last month to see if there are other ways to be healthier and manage my disease. The blood work she did showed my Thyroid Peroxidase TPO at 396 so very high. My TSH is normal and my T3 Free is borderline normal (2.3) as is Free T4 (1.01). I’ve been on prednisone for over a year but in a low dose currently. The functional Dr is very expensive since it’s not covered by insurance. Do I need to send these results to my GP for a referral to an endocrinologist? As background I had Graves’ disease in my 40’s but managed it through diet and meds and I’ve been in remission for almost 15 years without meds.

I have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's. My THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODY < 900
TSH, T4 & T3 are all normal.
I’ve felt fatigued for more than 14 years, low tolerance to cold, uncontrollable weight gain, and catch illness too easily. Last September I had cancer removed from my left lung, this past February a blob of inflammation was removed from my vocal cord. Im a very good medical advocate for myself but just wonder what else I’m missing?
I know almost nothing about Hashimoto’s and how to help myself feel better. I’ve briefly read to cut out Gluten, soy and dairy.
Would love any helpful hint, websites, books that anyone can recommend. 🩷
I tried to get into Mayo’s endocrinologist but was turned away 😭

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto at 16, and now 70. Been treated with thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine); one brand name is Synthroid. Originally saw an endocrinologist, but since the original diagnosis, my primary provider tests every year in case meds need adjustment. My dosage does need adjustment occasionally. I have no idea what causes the change in my TSH level. My mother and a couple of siblings are also on Synthroid; it can be genetic. There are many signs that your thyroid med may need adjusting. In my case, it does not affect my quality of life. No provider ever suggested a change in diet.

One thing I learned, if prescribed Synthroid, do not take it at the same time as a multi-vitamin. It will effect absorbion. Ask your provider or pharmacist about when to take and other meds to avoid taking at same time.

@anthene I suffer from Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism. I’m taking 75 mcg of Synthroid daily to control the Hypothyroidism and I have controlled my Hashimoto’s by eliminating gluten, dairy, soy and seed oils. I also had a food sensitivity test done to find out what foods I’m sensitive to. This has all helped my Hashimoto’s. Good luck on your journey!

I have Hashimotos also. I take NP thyroid 60 mg. I also have Myasthenia Gravis. My neurologist prescribed me Low dose Naltrexone. She said it also helps Hashimotos.
TPO and TgAb antibodies. Started at 427 and 11.5 after 6 months 277 and 3.9
Another great benefit is after starting LDN I'm no longer shedding and I have started to perspire again. When I didn't perspire I would easily overheat.

@roch I tried several meds. We could not get good levels with any of them. I went to Mayo and had Dr. Casler remove my Thyroid in 2017. (Which was a good thing because pathology came back with Papillary Cancer. I have not had more Cancer show up anywhere in my body. I have a PET Scan ever other year.) I've been on 75mcg of Tirosint ever since and have never had to change my dosage. It was a lifesaver for me.
