For many years I was a racewalker. My doctor was a runner. We both used the same track. I would often see him there and he would "cheer" me on. I always had high cholesterol numbers. But what he told me was that he was going to ignore the numbers because he saw how I exercised and knew my eating habits. He declined to give me statins because he felt it was my body that was making the cholesterol high, not my diet or life style. Flash forward to today. I am 91 years old and in good shape. Good enough to live independently and take care of myself. I still have high cholesterol numbers. I have never taken statins. So go figure.

1 ReactionAgree .I'm 85 and have bad cholesterol of 110,. what should I be heading for and how do I get there. Appear to be allergic to statins (pain).

Hi @tierbbb, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
I am tagging @mrspancakes thinking your comment is directed to the initial post, has anyone lowered high [300] cholesterol with diet or supplemnts. This way they will have a better chance of seeing your comment and providing an update.
You pose a great question. The LDL (“bad cholesterol”) goal that’s right for one person isn’t always the same for someone else. It often depends on things like whether you’ve had heart disease, diabetes, or other risk factors. Your healthcare team can help determine the target that’s appropriate for you.
Since you’ve had pain with statins, has your healthcare provider confirmed that the statin was the cause, or have you been able to try a different statin, a lower dose, or another cholesterol-lowering medication? There are several non-statin options available today that may be appropriate for some people.
I’m also curious. Are you hoping to lower your LDL through diet alone if possible, or are you looking for alternatives to statins because of the side effects?

Hi Janelle. I am hoping this is ok to reply to your comment above, knowing it wasn't directed to me. . .
to your question above, 'looking for alternatives to statins because of the side effects?' and or the reputation statins have. I have been on statins for nearly 30 yrs and feel my body is dealing with a lot of issues because of my time on the statins. Would like to be able to try to work with diet and exercises hoping my body will heal and reap the benifits of a healthy body.

1 ReactionAbsolutely, @mrspancakes! I was hoping you would see my comment to know @tierbbb posted on this discussion.
I read you were looking for others that lowered their numbers on supplements or changing your eating habits to correct this. This was about 8 months ago and I am wondering where you are with this today.
What have you learned? What have you tried, and how has it impacted your numbers?
@mrspancakes
I would recommend the Blue Zone diet. I follow it and my total cholesterol is 101. LDL is 20. I am 81.
