Has anyone been plagued by scoliosis?

Posted by amaimbourg @amaimbourg, Jul 20, 2025

I HAD BROKEN MY FOOT ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS OVER THE YEARS, AND UNFORTUNATELY, ENDED UP WITH ONE LEG MUCH SHORTER THAN THE OTHER. I WAS LEFT IN MY WALKING BOOT THE LAST TIME I BROKE IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND THAT'S WHEN THE MOST DAMAGE WAS DONE.
I AM TOLD THERE IS "NO GOING BACK". ANYONE HERE THAT HAS GONE BACK? DETAILS,PLEASE. GOD BLESS

@jbcobb2380 , I’m searching info for a family member who has severe curve. She had scoliosis surgery years ago, but has been told she needs another surgery by multiple doctors. She is very reluctant. She’s almost 60. I’ve suggested she get an opinion from Mayo Clinic.

I’m sorry that I don’t have any helpful information. For me, I wouldn’t ever consider surgery, even at 60. Everyone’s situation is different. Definitely there are surgeons who will do the surgeries. Mayo Clinic is a place to start.

I appreciate your input. I guess she is reluctant to have the surgery , but in light of the severity, one wonders what will happen. It’s very severe. We are very concerned. If only the progression could be stopped…….hopefully, she’ll get in with Mayo. She has had consults with other highly rated specialists, including Duke.

FROM ALL THE INFO I HAVE REC'D FROM SPECIALISTS, IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME TO DO THE SURGERY AT HER AGE. GOD BLESS US ALL WITH SCOLIOSIS!!!! MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE PAIN IS LIKE AND THE DEPRESSION IT CAUSES.
PRAYERS GOING UP FOR ALL OF US!!!

I don’t consider 60 too old. I’m 69 and have not had surgery. I have done PT, acupuncture, and epidural shots. Sadly my legs are starting to go numb and if I have the choice of surgery to be able to walk without falling I’ll try it. I realize surgery is risky - any surgery is - but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair if there is a possibility I don’t have to.

Hello Celia16,
Your relative's situation is similar to what mine was.
I was diagnosed with Scoliosis at a young age, and ended up having a spinal fusion with a Harrington Rod implant at the age of 19. I am currently 67 years old. Up until a few years ago, my back felt fine. The area that was previously fused is fine and my rod is intact, but everything below that section had major problems resulting in chronic pain.
I just had back surgery, on May 14th, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, by Dr. Jeremy Fogelson, a Scoliosis expert with considerable experience in situations like mine. Immediately after surgery my prior pain was gone. Initially, I felt pain in the area that was operated on, but that resolved by about 5 weeks. It will take approx 1 1/2 to 2 years for my back to completely fuse so I need to be cautious, but I am thrilled that I not longer have pain! I did intensive therapy and was walking with out assistance early on. (Walking and PT are part of my life.)

For more information, and prior conversations (including mine) about this, on this site search "Harrington Rods and Complications".
When the page pops, under the word "Discussion" , click on the title in BLUE Font "Harrington Rods and Complications"

Good luck with everything!
Nadine

Hello Celia, by accident I made my comments to you on JbCobb's reply. I think the link above will take you to my response. I encourage your relative to have the surgery.
(If the link does not work for you, you will find my comments in a reply to JbCobb.)

@amaimbourg ,
I appreciate your input. I have so much compassion for her. It’s just so unfair. She is a lovely, kind person and is really suffering. I feel helpless.

Have you ever heard of therapy for this condition by using a stretch bar?

Try the schroth method. This scoliosis PT has been around for decades. There are books on it & Look online for specialists, like Scroth Boss in Orland Park ILL, there is also another PT called Integrated Movement Physical both help with scoliosis thru breathing. Also consider a low impact yoga class and Pilates.

I am almost 70 and I have had scoliosis surgery one year ago! It helped allot, I am looking to get additional scoliosis surgery now from Dr Jamal McClendon or DR CHANDAN KRISHNA at Mayo Clinic in Arizonan. I would recommend she get an evaluation from one of these surgeons or a member of there team.

You are correct in suggesting she get an opinion from Mayo Clinic !

Good Luck and Prayers go out to you both ~
