Has anyone had a Hysteroscopy biopsy vs a D&C for uterine biopsy?
Has anyone had a hysteroscopy done instead of a D&C for uterine biopsy after postmenopausal bleeding?
I am 74 and had two episodes of slight spotting. My gynecologist did an exam and I had a transvaginal ultrasound, both were normal so my Dr didn't think a biopsy to check for cancer was needed, but said she'd do a biopsy if I wanted one. I don't want the in-office biopsy because I've had that done before and it was very painful. She suggested the MyoSure procedure which is a hysteroscopic procedure done under sedation and is less invasive than a D&C. But, the MyoSure brochure says it mainly. used to remove fibroids and polyps. Also, some research I've done said "The use of hysteroscopy in endometrial cancer is not established as there is concern that cancer cells could be spread into the peritoneal cavity." Other studies say it's as safe as a D&C.
I want to ask for a biopsy for reassurance that the spotting is not due to cancer, but I'm wondering if a D&C would be the better procedure. I'm going to ask my Dr but wanted to ask if anyone else had the MyoSure procedure done after abnormal spotting?

@reb2026 OBGYN doctors are specialists and they are trained to perform surgeries, such as D&C. I've had two of them and all were performed by my OBGYN doctor. This article may ease your mind. Good luck. https://www.modernwomenshealth.com/blog/can-gynecologists-perform-surgery/

3 Reactions@reb2026 I’ve had a D&C by two different gynecologists. These are specialists who are qualified and routinely do a D&C. Mine were done under sedation. I would not have wanted to do this procedure while awake and being awake was never a consideration by my gynecologist.
If you’re concerned that your gynecologist isn’t experienced enough to do a D&C, why not ask her how often and how many D&Cs she had performed? Physicians who do procedures are usually happy to answer this question.
Do you know when the D&C is scheduled?
It's scary to think about, but you will be in good hands with an OBGYN. Hope all goes well.

1 ReactionHello,
In December 2024, I had both a D& C and hysteroscopy using the Myosure system, and I found it very pain free with little recovery time. I just had to watch what I did for a little bit, because I overdid it on day 4 and had some heavy bleeding again. I felt reassured, though, that both methods were being used. I was diagnosed with grade 3 endometrial adenocarcinoma, and once the diagnosis came in, treatment could really start rolling quickly.

1 Reaction@dlgbb I didn't know about the Myosure system so I looked it up. I had a D&C with hysteroscopy with my local gynecologist at the time (2019). The method for a uterine biopsy is something to talk with one's medical provider about. Considering your diagnosis and mine (endometrial adenocarcinoma, Grade 1) it's possible that the Myosure procedure would have resulted in enough tissue sample for pathology to make my diagnosis.
Anyway, for anyone wondering about Myosure this is what I found. It's the description of the procedure by Hologic, the company that sells the product. So, in that sense, please be aware that this description is for financial gain (biased). However, I did find a few peer reviewed articles on the utility of Myosure.
