Has anyone had strabismus eye surgery
I am scheduled for eye muscle surgery to correct my long term strabismus. Is this a good decision or should I continue with a lot of prism correction in my glasses?

1 ReactionI have had 3 strabismus surgeries. Age 5, 24 and 42.
The later 2 to correct outward drifting of the right eye. I am extremely left eye dominant. My depth perception is fine and there is no double vision. You may never have equal vision in both eyes but with a skilled surgeon who specializes in strabismus you should have a good result. Wishing you the best!

2 ReactionsI had it a month ago at Mayo. It cured the problem. I’ve worn contacts for 50 years and didn’t like dealing with glasses. First week after was painful but no complications. 6 weeks in and still sone redness but glad I made the decision to have the surgery now at age 67.

3 ReactionsWelcome @janetjezior, Thank you for sharing your experience with the strabismus surgery. It's helpful to hear from members with experience. Do you mind sharing what you were searching for when you found Mayo Clinic Connect?
Thank you for your responses. I am 75 years old and am nervous about the surgery. I need 6 diopters of prism now for correction which is close to the max the physician wants to prescribe. I’m hopeful there won’t be any complications. 🤞🏻

1 ReactionI am 85, in good health, drive daily, see doctors regularly and they tell me to keep doing what have been doing. I have received from an MD specializing in Strabismus surgery an ok to have the surgery where the muscles on each of my eyes will be reattached to to a weaker location on the eyes. I have had this condition since birth. Have any of the readers of this post being in their 80's have any thoughts on the proposed surgery?
I previously had surgery in one eye in 1963 and results held until pandemic in 2020. Developed double vision eventually and had surgery at almost 65 years old on both eyes. Much improvement that has been holding for about 3 years.
You could get a second opinion. I was having difficulty driving with the high level of misalignment and double vision I was having. Losing independence was a big factor for me. Did you get a specific diagnosis of the type of strabismus?
I had esotropia (inward turn one eye) and hypertropia (upward turn in one eye). It made a huge difference for me. I went to Pediatric Opthalmologist (even though adult) as this is their specialty.

1 Reaction@oregontraveler541 I am scheduled for surgery on both eyes this Thursday.
My operation will correct each eye turning outward. To me, each eye seems to operate independent of the other. When an eye is the dominant eye and sees straight ahead my mind sees through it and the non-dominant eye goes outward but when its the turn of the other eye to be dominant and see straight ahead, my mind sees through it and the former dominant eye goes outward. My non-dominant eye still sees but my mind does does not register what that eye sees.
I checked around, the web, and my primary care physician and they all gave the doctor and the operation positive reviews even considering my age.
Thank you for responding to my plea

2 Reactions@david2423 Good luck and wishing you good results with your surgery.
@david2423 The operation went well and both eyes work in tandem. I had no pain, just weeping eyes and scratchiness when I blinked, all history. A little blood in the tears and a blood blister which has disappeared today, Monday. See great and have had virtually no double vision. I drove the day after the operation and every day since. I see the Dr. this Thursday when I will thank her profusely.
Thanks for your interest.
