Has anyone had renal vascular hypertension not due to stenosis?
I have very high renal artery velocities in only one renal artery (several Dopplers months apart), sudden onset very high blood pressure that is hard to control with medication, but no stenosis shows up on CTA or MRA. My BP is very high all day when I'm upright and low when I'm still lying down after sleeping. No history of hypertension before this. What can cause renal vascular hypertension/very high velocity that isn't due to stenosis? All endocrine and fixed structural causes seem to have been ruled out. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi @penny001
I am just reading this discussion you created about renal vascular hypertension not caused by stenosis. It make sense that you question what else can be happening since stenosis is the leading cause of renal vascular hypertension.
According to American Family Physician, “more than 72 million Americans (2009) have hypertension, and the majority of these persons have essential hypertension. However, a significant subset has a secondary cause. The most common cause of secondary hypertension is renal vascular hypertension, of which renal artery stenosis is the leading pathology. Up to 5 percent of all occurrences of hypertension are caused by renal artery stenosis.”
I am adding a link to information about secondary hypertension that may help, if you haven’t reviewed it already. I want to point out information under ‘Causes’ referring to atherosclerosis and fibromuscular dysplasia related to vascular hypertension.
-Mayo Clinic Secondary Hypertension Overview: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/secondary-hypertension/symptoms-causes/syc-20350679
Because the above overview refers to fibromuscular dysplasia I am including related information as well.
- Mayo Clinic Fibromuscular Dysplasia Overview: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fibromuscular-dysplasia/symptoms-causes/syc-20352144
@smpresley and @kariulrich have commented about renal fibromuscular dysplasia and may have information from their experience to help you.
Are you experiencing symptoms other than high blood pressure? Are you experiencing any reduction in renal functioning? What is next for you, will you see your doctor soon?
My vascular surgeon and hypertension/ kidney specialist agreed not to do an angioplasty on my renal arteries (I have 2 arteries that go into each kidney). My meds were changed and my BP has returned to a good measure (no more headaches and less heart palpitations).
