GUIDE program from Medicare: Does anyone know anything about it?

Posted by rayesteven @rayesteven, Jan 5 8:13am

My husband has just received a letter from Medicare saying that he may be eligible for free dementia care through a new Medicare program called GUIDE. Has anyone participated in this program, and if so would you recommend it?

I talked to someone about it and set up a virtual visit in February but don’t get excited. She said up to 2500$ a year!! A drop in the bucket

Why not. I’ve been in contact with the Rep here, she has given me great resources.

Apparently my husband received this letter as well. I saw it in the kitchen trash can last night… I have informed delivery so I know what we are receiving on a daily basis. I forgot to ask him what we got from Medicare when he brought the mail in….. bless his heart. He doesn’t want to be reminded of what he has… I just didn’t say anything.

I took it out and read it, we aren’t in need of these services yet… good to know it’s out there though. I am sure my day will come and I will look into it further. It looks like meal service and respite care will be available?

It sounds like a good and helpful program. Why do you think Medicare advantage plans do not qualify? Doesn’t seem right to me.

@labrown Medicare Advantage is actually private insurance, and those insurers don’t have to cover everything Medicare does.

@tgeno Thank you for your reply. I always thought an Advantage plan was a good thing, especially since it’s offered through benefits of company retirement.

I’m not saying that Medicare Advantage is bad, just that it’s not for everyone. Many doctors and medical facilities who take Medicare do not take Medicare Advantage. Also, many procedures covered by Medicare without preauthorization require prior approval under Medicare Advantage and can be denied.

GUIDE is a great program but not available everywhere. It is a pilot project for dementia families being implanted in certain areas across the country. If you live in an area where it is available, you are so lucky! Services might include adult day care and respite.

Here’s an official description:
“The GUIDE Model (Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience) is a collaborative, integrated dementia care program designed for Medicare beneficiaries and their care partners. With around 400 providers participating nationwide, the GUIDE Model offers new resources and support for people living with dementia and their families.”
