Grover's Disease: What works to help find relief?

Posted by 43219876x @43219876x, Sep 23, 2016

I have been diagnosed with Grover's disease under my breasts. I had a biopsy for diagnosis. Tried topical ointment with no really good results. Any ideas?

My Grover's first manifested in August of last year (2022) and I was diagnosed by punch biopsy in October. I was miserable, itching all over my body all the time. I changed dermatologists early in 2023 because the initial one prescribed nothing but Triamcinolone cream. The second dermatologist worked closely with me, and we went through at least half a dozen medications without results until he started me on Dupixent injections in late August, almost exactly a year after I first exhibited symptoms. It took about two months of biweekly shots, but since that time I have been itch free. Quite a few people who participate in the Facebook Grover's Disease Support Group report the same results.

The biggest problem with Grover's papules under the breasts is that they tend to stay damp. What worked for me was using zinc oxide in the form of Desitin diaper paste. It's messy, but when applied to clean and dry under-breast skin, it kept the area both moisture-free and itch-free for me.

Desitin powder has zinc oxide and Zeasorb AF can also
help in moist body areas and the folds under the breasts.

I’m reporting on my progress in hopes of being helpful to others. I started drinking daily cilantro smoothies a little less than 3 weeks ago. I blend about 1-2 cups cilantro in 1/2 cup water. In the last week I’ve added a scoop of Althetic Greens-1. It’s a vitamin powder I was already taking, so adding it to the Cilantro smoothies was easy. I drink that every day, and am also taking 6 tablets of NOW brand 500mg Chlorella (this is the recommended dose). I am thrilled to report that my rash and itching is about 60% improved. I’m waking up less at night and my big patches of rash have the appearance of drying up. I have had a few intensely itchy small spots break out in the last week, but am hopeful that I will continue to improve and am excited to continue the Cilantro and Chlorella. The other changes I made, which I learned about on this site, is to apply Zinc cream (Burt’s Bees Diaper cream). I find the protective barrier very soothing. I also had an extremely itchy head for which my Dr. recently prescribed Ketonozole shampoo. I’ve felt tremendous relief from my itchy scalp after using the shampoo, so I assume there are fungal components to my itch? I’ve tried the shampoo on my body rash as well, without the same relief. No topical creams prescribed by my Dr. have helped my body rash in the slightest. Not steroid cream or several others that I’ve tried. But I’ve found the zinc to be soothing and also like Eucerin Itch Relief lotion as a moisturizer. If I’m at home, pressing an ice pack to my itchiest spots provides somewhat quick relief. I also bought “cold sleeves” which I keep in the freezer because my most maddening rash is on my arms. Side note on cilantro prep. I bought many fresh bunches, then washed and separated them into amounts equal to 1-2 cups, put them in sandwich bags and froze them. It makes it so easy to just get a bag out each day and blend in water. Also, for those who like reading medical studies—in my search for answers about why cilantro might be helping, I did find a couple of studies looking at the benefits of ingesting Coriandrum (Cilantro) as a therapy for itchy or reactive skin) . https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9004245/. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24963872/. Thanks so much to all who post here. In the last couple of years my mysterious rash with intense itching has gotten worse and worse and was becoming debilitating. A recent diagnosis of Grovers led me to this site and I am so grateful. My Dr. is impatient with all my questions, but here I’ve been able to learn so much! I’m experiencing some physical relief of symptoms and and the sense of community is also comforting. Wishing everyone a itch free (or less itchy) holiday season!

Thanks for your research and providing the links to the studies. All the best.

I do light therapy and for me it works! I bought my own machine but I still need a Rx to use it as it has a code to unlock

It has been suggested to me, by a natural health specialist, that I use apple cider vinegar to treat my Grover's. I have been doing this gingerly - applying the cider with a paint brush over wide areas. Am unsure how positive the results are so far. Is anyone familiar with this remedy? Any comments on it?

I have started to use Zostrix on my Grovers out breaks. Despite being a pain medication, it was prescribed by a derm for a friend of mine to use on an outgrowth that itched. I decided to try it myself and it is pretty effective. It is a "natural" pain reliever with capsaicin, thus it will burn a bit for a few minutes. It is supposed to be applied 3-4 times a day. Again, I still use ice packs, but to a much lesser extent. Available on Amazon and is pretty inexpensive.

The best temporary relief I have had in my 18 month 2007/2008 and current 26 month outbreaks was from Eucerin Itch Relief. Tried cilantro and chlorella capsules for 5 months with no success. I attributed 13 years itch relief to 300 mg of Gabapentin every night but it just quit working 26 months ago, but it could have just been the "transient" part of this curse.
