Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

Grateful for this start to my day. I think I am going to enjoy being part of this group. Grateful that I was able to get to church last night, we've been sick and broken for a month. Grateful for moderate winter temps today and the coffee pot that's about ready in the breakroom. Happy Thursday.

@gingerw hey Ginger! are you Hawaiian?

@karen00 Nope. But I do name all my vehicles, with something that is personalized for them in some way. There have been times the name came right away, other times it took a few months of driving and getting comfortable with the car.

Today I am grateful for a stroke of inspiration, doing something simple for the holidays. You see, I don't do holidays very well. Of course it puts me under pressure, a deadline to get things done and I have promised myself not to stress too much. But I am pleased with a decision made and anxious to get started today.

I am grateful for my 4 year old grandson and having an entire day with only him. We did many things and he loves my craft basket. I also was able to attend his 1st Christmas program for preschool. The sanctuary was standing room only. What a joy. Being a grandma is a privilege and a gift.

@gingerw Hi Ginger, I’m grateful for having a choice of doctors ! I’m having a lot of medical issues right now and I’m very lucky that there is more than 1 hospital and docs to help me!
Have you been to Hawaii?

@karen00 No, never been to Hawaii. And it isn't on my bucket list. Dunno, it just doesn't interest me. Maybe the idea of being stuck on an island is unattractive to me?

@gingerw Oh boy did I love it! I guess it was two things that really appealed to me- the laid back attitudes and the heavenly smells of the flowers. I wish I could replicate those smells here. My favorite is gardenia.

Today I'm grateful that I have caring, compassionate people in my life. Here on Connect, all of you in this group are THE best! And I also have wonderful neighbors who are willing to help if needed or stop for a cup of coffee if possible. Then there are faraway friends that I see on FB, hear from with cards during the holidays, and occasionally get to visit them or they come here. Everyone of these people make my life richer. I want to thank all of you here - and I'm going to find a way to thank those others too. Life is too short not to acknowledge the joy others bring into our lives.

@karen00 - I was sorry to hear about your hospital stay, but I was impressed that you were grateful for a choice of doctors. I agree. That matters. Hope you are feeling better. And @gingerw - I love that you are in a prayer shawl group. That is such a caring group to be part of. And @parus and @lioness - your posts about your grandchildren truly made me smile from ear to ear! Have a great evening.
