Foot neuropathy: What gives you relief?

Posted by kathrina @kathrina, Nov 5, 2019

It seems if I get enough activity/exercise daily I don’t have pain; if not, am awakened from sleep and must get up (even in the middle of the night). What’s going on & what more should I do to avoid rest-disruption?

Is it common to have neuropathy on the bottom of both feet Is taking 12 300 mg gabapantin in a 24 hour period common

Hello! My neuropathy started in my feet at first, too. I thought it was my restless leg syndrome that was progressing and that is what the doctors thought as well. So I was not treated for a number of years. It had progressed almost up to my knees before I switched doctors and said this has to be some thing else. I had been on gabapentin for fibromyalgia but I had difficulty breathing so I was switched to Topiramate.

Gabapentin is not effective for most pain patients and has many serious side effects. There are many better alternatives. Please see this blog: https://www.paintreatmentdirectory.com/posts/gabapentin-side-effects-effectiveness-and-alternatives

Hello @intscout2 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I wanted to connect you with other members who also have foot neuropathy, like @johnbishop also recommended, so you will notice I have moved your post here:
- Foot neuropathy: What gives you relief?: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/foot-neuropathy/

To John's point, do you have numbness and/or pain in your feet?

Has anyone tried Gabapentin in a prescription lotion form? I have pain, tingling on bottoms of my feet. I cannot take oral Gabapentin as it makes me sick. I’m hoping the lotion will help and I assume it won’t have the same gastrointestinal side effects.

Hi @cperlin you are so right! Gabapentin was given to me when I was in the hospital 3 years ago and made me delirious. I was talking all crazy, picking things out of the air. When my daughter came to see me I was so upset because she did not bring my cat. My daughter knew I was on something and told the Dr. they took me off of the Gabapentin and it stopped after a day. I new what I was doing but could not could not control it. What a crazy s4 hours!

I take gabapentin 3X a day for neuropathy caused from chemo. If I forget a dose my feet feel dead. It also acts as a happy pill for me. I'm 81.
