Fearing risks of Prolia

Posted by slr1 @slr1, Jan 6 8:55pm

I am going to my pcp tomorrow morning to discuss whether to start Prolia or Jubbonti after getting dexa scan results showing my osteoporosis has gotten worse. I took Ralaxifene for the last 2 years and it didn't help. I have researched these 2 drugs and have read a ton of bad side effects from patient reviews and I am really nervous to try! After taking Boniva just one time in the past, I felt like I was ran over by a truck for 3 days and I refused to ever take a biphosphate again. I am thinking about not starting a new drug and exercising more. Any input is much appreciated!

@monotypegirl thank you so much. That is what I needed to hear. My t score is -2.6. I didn’t want my numbers to get worse.
I just have to work on balance and hope my numbers improve when I get my next scan.
It took a long time for me to commit. Prolia was the best choice for me since other drugs like fossamax and reclast didn’t give the results my doctor and I hoped for.
Reclast will be my rebound drug if I have issues with Prolia.
I have to get in the routine of daily exercises and balance and balance.
Thanks again.

Are you saying you have never had an anabolic bone drug? If not, why?

I have done fossamax, and other drugs for many years, with no improvement.,

So sorry to hear that. I've been taking alendronate, forteo evenity and Prolia. My best result has been great gains on Evenity. Have you,at least, maintained your beginning dexa scores?

REPLY

My dexa score dropped to -2.6 on my last test on October last year.
I think I have to wait 2 years for my next scan.
I hope to be able to maintain after 2 years,

I understand from others here that you can private pay and the cost is not exorbitant.

@gravity3 ok, I can investigate that. I read somewhere if you have OP you can get one every year. I will have to see where i read that.

Hi, I am sending you good vibes! I am a 72-year-old woman. I have been getting Prolia injections for 1-1/2 years; my fourth shot is in mid April. I was very nervous at first; it took me a long while to commit, even though I trusted my then osteoporosis doctor (who was also an orthopedist). But in my case I was out of options. (My bone density/hip was not good and worsening; I rejected bisphosphonates as I was afraid of them, as I have two joint replacements and feared bad mojo.) We agreed that Prolia was my best choice at that point. I have had no side effects whatsoever related to the injections. (Hooray!) I am committed now to taking Prolia the rest of my life, unless medical science finds a better alternative. And they might! I have a new osteoporosis doctor (my first doctor retired!), and this one is a sports medicien specialist, which is encouraging me to get/stay in my best shape with PT and daily exercises and walking. ALL THE BEST to you on your Prolia journey!

@monotypegirl just wanted you to know that I didn’t have any reaction to the injection—yet.
I am going to give it 36 hours and hope I can call it good.
My next injection is at the end of July.
Those vibes helped.
Thank you.

Hey there. Been a while since I posted. I need/want good mojo and energy. I am going in for my first Prolia shot tomorrow, jan28.
A bit about me, I am 73 yo, small boned and weigh 120.
I have balance issues and am more afraid of fractures than possible side effects.
Positive energy only please.
Thanks all
Aussiemaggs73. Are you still there!

@leslieb52 hi Leslie. Hope it all went well which I’m sure it did. Sorry late reply. Had trouble signing in plus I’m away from home in qld at the moment. Let’s know how you go. I’m going back to dermatologist on 2 Feb when I get back home to see if my rash is caused by prolia but I think will need a blood test as well as the biopsy she’s already taken. It’s ok though not bothering me other than it doesn’t look great but not that bad. I just need to know what’s causing it. Sending you positive energy all the way from Australia. Maggs Xo

@ausiemaggs73 Maggs, all your energy made it here. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I am hoping everything keeps going this smoothly.
Let me know what the dermatologist says. Why do you think the rash was caused by Prolia? I have seen that rashes sometimes occur with Prolia.
Hope it is an easy fix.
Let me know how it goes,

So glad all’s going well. I think mainly because a rash can be one of the more common side effects but I can’t say for sure when it appeared as it came on gradually. If I want to guess again it could be from a Covid shot that I had last June. Main thing is that it’s nothing serious or part of a worse underlying condition. I’ll keep you informed for sure. As far as everything else with the prolia I’ve been fine. I’m trying to do some heavier weights as well and a bit more high impact workouts which may help too. I’m not due for another dexa scan for about another year so I’ll try a combined approach with drugs diet and heavier weights but nothings really changed for me. I’m still doing what I always do. One thing I do want to work on is balance as I know it can decline after 70. Even though I think I’m fine it doesn’t hurt to stand on one leg for a few minutes a day! We do not want to fall!!!
