Excess B12

Posted by rheachi22 @rheachi22, Apr 19 5:23pm

I have high (above 2000) levels of B12 in my body not due to taking too much as I have went off of B12 six months ago and it is still at this level.

Hello @rheachi22,

It is always concerning to get test results that indicate high or low levels of anything in our bodies. To see B12 numbers above 2,000 must have been a bit of a jolt.

There is another discussion on Connect on high levels of B12 that you may find useful to look through and participate in if you feel comfortable:

@rheachi22, if you are comfortable sharing, were you experiencing anything in particular that led to you being tested for B12 or was it something that showed up routinely in your bloodwork? Have you had a chance to discuss the B12 levels with the provider who ordered your testing?

I was exhausted which is extremely rare for me. I was even napping which I had never done. However, after reading the input on line here, I do believe it has to do with my gut and hope to get tested for SIBO. I did have SIBO about 10 years ago and worked with a wonderful Functional Medicine nurse practitioner, figured out it was SIBO, and took an herbal regime recommended to her that she got from a gastro doc from Johns Hopkins. It worked amazingly well. I will keep you posted on what occurs. When I did the last testing it was through a stool sample but it appears now there is a test for it through breath which I am going to look into for the accuracy and ease!

Yes, I was experiencing exhaustion and confusion and thinking my B12 and other markers may be off so I asked for some tests to be run (b12, thyroid, Vit d, iron). All were normal except B12. And rather than low, which I was expecting, I was surprised when it came up so high. My doctors told me I was taking too much B12 so I just stopped and 6 months later took the test again (still tired) and it had not changed. I see my new doctor on Monday and she was doing some more research also on this so it will be good to have a talk about where to go from here.

I have the same problem. My levels are sky-high, it I feel so rotten without it. Have to take 5000 at night, and 5000 at morning to get through the day.
