Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and blood

Posted by needtoknow @needtoknow, Feb 10, 2016

Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and tiny amounts of blood. It seems to come from the back of my throat or nose. My doctor has seen the scab but does not see anything wrong. This, to me, seems really odd. Has anyone had this problem?

Hi @needtoknow . How long have you been experiencing this? Do you have a fever or any shortness of breath?

REPLY

Hi rebecccamcroberts. No fever or shortness of breath. It has been going on for over 6 months. I have gone to several ENT doctors and to walk-in clinics. No one seems to be able to offer me a cause or solution. I have taken antibiotics, used nasal wash, Mucinex, etc. I need to find a doctor who can examine me and find out why this is happening.

Hi @needtoknow. I'm sorry to hear you're having such a frustrating experience - I can imagine how tiresome that would be. We can't offer a diagnosis through Connect, but I did find some information that might be helpful for you to review and discuss with your doctors. http://www.mayoclinic.org/symptoms/cough/basics/when-to-see-doctor/sym-20050846

Do any of the at-home remedies, like cough drops or tea, help?

Hi @needtoknow. How are you feeling? I wanted to check in to see whether any of those home remedies worked - has anything helped?

have had a scab in my left nostril that bleeds when I clear it from my nose for a number of years. I have had difficulty with my whole sinus down into my throat. The scab bleeds after it comes out of my nose. Sounds gross but I have heard of numbers of people having the same thing. I think it is a staph infection, some form of cold sore related (herpes simplex.) I have always had cold sores every so often in or around my nose, never on the lips. I have read by Googling the subject that these kind of staph infections love the nose since it is a good spot to set up an infection like this. I think mine also is connected to the sinuses. Mine has smaller scabs now. I put Cleavers on a small cotton pad and put it inside the nose on the cartilage where the scab started. It dried up and got smaller but the thing is still there. Maybe it is not the same as yours but the scab and blood in the mucus sounds a tad like my problem. Thanks or anything that we can hear about other cases like this.

Do not know why but mine has gotten better. I still feel as though one tries to form but I now can hack up the piece of mucous before it gets really bad. My doctor put me on Singular to take every day so that may be what has helped. I will let you know how it goes. <br />

Hi @emmur16, have you seen your doctor about this? If you haven't yet, you may want to discuss with him or her your thoughts about this being related to staph. I know you said you had been Googling this topic, but here's some more information you might find useful: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/staph-infections/basics/definition/con-20031418

I'm happy to hear your situation has improved, @needtoknow! Looking forward to hearing more about how your progress goes.

@needtoknow Thank you for your kind reply to my nose problem. I used an holistic product called cleavers. These drops I used topically inside my nose onto the cartilage where the first scab appeared. The scab had formed and then came out of the nose when I cleansed the area. The bleeding was bright red and several dabbings stopped the bleed. Then the cycle commenced again. After I used the Cleavers a few times the scab formed thin crust and now inside my nose there is a more extensive light crust. When I cleanse the nostril there is the same bleeding, but the area where the large scab formed seems not to be boring into the cartilage as it was before. I found a fellow by Googling before I found the Mayo discussion site. This fellow described the identical problem I have stressing his was not cancer (verified.) I spoke with my doctor yesterday briefly about this condition and said I had had an operation for BBC six years ago on the outside nostril of my nostril on the other side. There was a small thing on my nose for years and it was very tiny. As I say it looked like a tiny scratch. It tuned out to be BBC and I went to Dartmouth Hitchcock to have it removed. The specialist said it was very deep and it amazed me to see how deep it had been. No recurrence T.G.
Yesterday my doctor said in closing, "Basal Cell is never going to kill you!"
I am not ready to go to a specialist about this and have them doing tests and start taking my nose apart. I am a healthy, active 90 years old and I have had all the surgeries, tests, probing, etc. for my life time that I intend to ever have.
I feel this thing is staph as the other fellow on Google described. I learned that "bugs" like the staph love the inside of the nose to set up housekeeping and I have always been plagued with cold sores (Herpes Simplex) inside my nostrils. There are loads of blood vessels inside the nose. Hence the bleeding.I also have a deviated septum which I think contributes to my nose afflictions. Thank you dear for replying to my inquiry. Be well.
P.S. I also used Tea Tree Esssential Oil on the site and it dries the area. I think perhaps I have to use the Cleavers more often for awhile. Blessings

Well, I spoke too soon about the scab inside my nose getting better. It has started up again to my dismay. I cannot figure out why it happens at the same place in my nose all the time. I will continue to search for answers as it is very discouraging that no one can figure out why this happens. I will read about staph and see if it leads me in the right direction. Stay well and thanks for your comments.

I had staph some years back which I treated in a local way with mixed herbs and roots, since then it seem to be ok, but recently about two months now I began to witness some rashes and boil on my private part and my lap, Base on what I have heard so far about staph, I know it's staph cos at a time my sperm became watery and I could barely have sex second time. Pls what I need now is how I can take care of this ugly situation.
