Managing IBS and GERD dietary restrictions

Posted by jackiem95 @jackiem95, May 24, 2019

I am struggling to manage dietary restrictions for both IBS and GERD. One thing I REALLY miss is tomatoes and foods using them like spaghetti sauce. I found a recipe for a sauce using roasted and puréed red bell peppers. Only other ingredient was chicken broth with no additives and a little basil. Very tasty but I didn't overeat. I thought I had understood that bell peppers didn’t trigger GERD symptoms. Well in the middle of the night I woke up with acid reflux. Can’t think of anything else that would have caused it. Has anyone else had a reflux attack from cooked red bell peppers?

I was just diagnosed with AGS today. I live at the Lake of the Ozarks and we have a ton of ticks here. This is going to be some major changes for me without beef and pork in my diet.

I find I can tolerate aged cheeses, kefir which says lactose intolerant friendly on the bottle and Chobani Greek yogurt. I’ve read that when they strain Greek yogurt, a lot of the whey (lactose) is removed.

I just got my diagnosis today and have an appointment with the dietitian in a few days. I'm definitely not looking forward to the changes that I'm going to have to make.

Hi @annquinn - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I've been to the Lake of the Ozarks, and it is beautiful there.

Confirming if you are talking about a diagnosis with Aicardi-Goutières syndrome, Alpha-gal Syndrome or Adrenogenital Syndrome?

So many acronyms in medicine ... thank you for your help.

You’ll find substitutions for the foods you have to give up and it will all become normal in time. I don’t miss the foods I had to give up at all anymore.

@lisalucier

It's alpha gal syndrome. Sorry didn't know there's others with same letters.

I love the Ozarks and living here since I retired but there is no way to avoid ticks at all.

Can you please tell me where to find these substitutions?

@annquinn - no problem. Just wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing.

Ticks are bothersome. You are right. I remember a place where my family and family friends vacationed every Thanksgiving in Northern California on the coast that was full of them. All the kids had tick checks every night.

Since you have alpha gal syndrome, here are two discussions on Mayo Clinic Connect that might particularly interest you:

@annquinn I’m sure the dietitian will be able to help you with this. If you can’t have beef or pork, there are many other foods you can eat instead:
Poultry (chicken, turkey)
Seafood
Fruits and vegetables
Grains, nuts, and legumes
