IBS and GERD

Posted by jackiem95 @jackiem95, May 24, 2019

I am struggling to manage dietary restrictions for both IBS and GERD. One thing I REALLY miss is tomatoes and foods using them like spaghetti sauce. I found a recipe for a sauce using roasted and puréed red bell peppers. Only other ingredient was chicken broth with no additives and a little basil. Very tasty but I didn't overeat. I thought I had understood that bell peppers didn’t trigger GERD symptoms. Well in the middle of the night I woke up with acid reflux. Can’t think of anything else that would have caused it. Has anyone else had a reflux attack from cooked red bell peppers?

My GI has recommended an over the counter product called IBGard for my Irritable Bowel Syndrome. When he told me that it contained peppermint oil I expressed concern because I also have GERD and peppermint is a well known trigger for reflux. He assured me that this product is specially formulated to pass through the stomach without dissolving and into the gut. I read the reviews on Amazon and they were mostly positive—except for some people who said they had had terrible heartburn or reflux. No one mentioned that they had GERD but did not have problems taking IBGard. Has anyone here with GERD successfully used this product?

@rachel_b
Thanks for giving us an opinion on the IBGard. I tried the FDgard (as it was recommended by someone on Connect), however, I found that it has caraway oil and that was a problem for me. Papaya enzyme tablets work best for me. If a meal does not seem to "go down" well I chew a couple of tablets and it helps. Finding the right fix for digestive problems can be difficult. Thanks again for weighing in on something that has helped you!

Of course @hopeful33250 ! This forum has been super helpful to me so I’m always happy to share things I’ve figured out too. That is interesting about the caraway oil! Reading ingredient labels can be a full time job, huh? I’m curious to research the papaya enzyme tablets more now. Thanks for sharing what works for you too 🙂

I am just starting on a diet for a hiatal hernia and appreciate reading comments from experienced people who have been managing this for a while. I have always eaten a lot of varied foods that mostly include vegetables, fruits, eggs, chicken, fish, shellfish, and less often beef and pork. I also like 'tasty' food and heavily season trying to keep from adding so much salt. I realize that peppers, onions and hot spices of all kinds are now 'out' of my diet.

Can anyone offer suggestions to make my food more tasty?

My daughter has severe IBS. Intermittent diarrhea and occasional vomiting and stomach cramps. She has been medically evaluated and prescribed an antispasmodic, but this does not seem very helpful. She also has chronic Gerd. Would appreciate any feedback on treatments that might be helpful. She is desperate!

Has she had a CT scan for MALs ( median arcuate ligament syndrome) also known as Dunbars disease and celiac compression syndrome. Very much underdiagnosed and considered to be a rare condition. The only cure and management is surgery. I have been dealing with this since childhood, 58 now. If I can help just one young person avoid life long suffering by getting the word out and sharing my experience , then it's to the good. Be a strong advocate for your child , be vigilant with research , insist on more scans , hopefully they will start looking outside of the " cookie cutter" diagnosis. Praying for a quick resolution!

First, my heart goes out to you and your daughter. I understand the frustration, embarrassment, anxiety and distress that you are experiencing. I have the same thing and am no expert, but maybe I can tell you what has worked for me and you may see something that can help your daughter. For GERD, I purchased a 7" high foam wedge from Amazon for sleeping and this has really helped stopped acid, food, etc. from traveling back through my esophagus into my throat. I eat early and less in the evening. I began eating a Mediterranean diet, began walking, and lost weight. This was very hard for me. 🙄 I also saw a dietitian and she gave me a list of foods to avoid to help with GERD and I am fairly serious about not having spicy food, processed foods, caffeine, chocolate, etc. The list is long, but there are many foods that aren't acidic. It has really helped!

IBS is a nightmare. I can't seem to get a handle on what is causing it. I'm about to try FODMAP. Google it. It's a food elimination system to see what's triggering the constipation, diarrhea, bloating, etc. I hope something here helps.

This is must useful to consider. She has not had this assessment, but I will advocate for it. Thanks!

I feel like my IBS is under control. I’m following the FODMAP diet, taking the probiotics found in Kefir, Chobani yogurt, and taking 25 mg of Nortriptyline daily. If needed, on occasion, I also take Imodium.
