IBS and GERD

Posted by jackiem95 @jackiem95, May 24, 2019

I am struggling to manage dietary restrictions for both IBS and GERD. One thing I REALLY miss is tomatoes and foods using them like spaghetti sauce. I found a recipe for a sauce using roasted and puréed red bell peppers. Only other ingredient was chicken broth with no additives and a little basil. Very tasty but I didn't overeat. I thought I had understood that bell peppers didn’t trigger GERD symptoms. Well in the middle of the night I woke up with acid reflux. Can’t think of anything else that would have caused it. Has anyone else had a reflux attack from cooked red bell peppers?

I think it’s the first time I see Alpha-Gal Syndrome mentioned here.
My daughter has AGS- manifesting in beef allergy, including the smell of beef cooking.
Very frustrating.

It is very frustrating and it is way beyond just beef. There are mammal-sourced ingredients in so many products that you have to read the labels for everything and often check with the manufacturer to determine if ingredients such as glycerin, gelatin, magnesium stearate, etc are mammal-sourced or plant-sourced. Only organic sugar and some lot numbers from Domino Sugar are "safe". Others are filtered through bone char. Bottled water can be filtered through bone char. Many processed foods use whey (dairy) even when they claim dairy-free. It goes on and on. I thought this was bad enough but for many of us, this morphs into Histamine Intolerance which is another level altogether. You are probably aware but there are some good AGS support groups on FB and Alpha-Gal Info. org is an excellent reseource.

I have had IBS for a few years and I have tried everything. The main items that I found to be triggers are: dairy (lactose intolerance), saturated fats (meat, especially oils including olive oil, sugar and gluten. I tried Fodmap and it never worked. I am back to normal if I stay away from the above triggers!! Don’t forget to take a probiotic! 😊

Dairy is a big trigger for histamine intolerance which is beyond lactose intolerance. Olives, sugar and gluten are also high histamine foods as well as anything that is fermented, pickled, and foods with vinegar. Tomatoes, avocados, bananas, citrus as well as black and green tea are high histamine foods. This can be misdiagnosed as only IBS. Some strains of probiotics are helpful but others are harmful. Look for Low Histamine Probiotics.

My daughter has severe IBS. Intermittent diarrhea and occasional vomiting and stomach cramps. She has been medically evaluated and prescribed an antispasmodic, but this does not seem very helpful. She also has chronic Gerd. Would appreciate any feedback on treatments that might be helpful. She is desperate!

EMMA is a supplement that, in the simplest of terms, cleanses the bowels. And it is all natural.
This natural Emma probiotics supplement is designed to restore balance to your gut microbiome and support overall wellness, offering a simple yet powerful solution to your digestive health needs.
The Emma Relief supplement was developed in collaboration with Dr. Gina Sam, a recognized expert in gut health, creating a formula that is unique in addressing the true root causes of digestive issues.
What sets Emma Relief apart from conventional solutions like fiber supplements, laxatives, or certain Emma probiotics is its powerful blend of medicinal herbs, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and prebiotics.
I just purchased two bottles but I was hoping to hear from someone on this Mayo site who may have tried the product and reviewed the product. The reviews (4000+) I have seen are in the mid 4s out 5.

As you look into the EMMA supplement, I wanted to point out an article from McGill University that may be a useful read:

Thank you Lisa. Since I have already ordered it, I am going to try it. Perhaps I will be one of the lucky ones who found it to be helpful. If not, I will TRY to return it, given their REFUND POLICY.
I appreciate you very much. God bless you. brotherchuckles80 aka Charles

Charles @brotherchuckles80, You are not alone. Wished I would have done more research before I ordered Emma capsules earlier this year and took it for a couple of months with not much difference in my daily bowel movements and constipation. Pretty sure mine is due to a messed up colon made worse by a failed colonoscopy in 2022. I switched to another supplement that's similar function but much cheaper and it's only the good gut bacteria - Lactobacillus Acidophilus - Probiotic Supplement Supporting Digestive Health. Too early for me to tell on this one as I've only been taking it for a month or so and still have to resort to my occasional senna tea in the evening which gets me moving the next morning 🙃.

Hoping Emma might give you some help, if not, we are a day older and a little wiser and just need to remember to research, research, research... or ask our doctors 🙂 My new Mayo PCP has given me a few good suggestions, one being to take a senna tablet in the morning and the Miralax in the evening which has helped some.

I have to tell you John, I went against my own philosophy of research, research, research. I got caught up in the moment with that video. And I had just received a Father's day check from my son so I was not going to have to ask my wife to use our credit card. Darn! I am 81 and I did not need to add another year so quickly. it is funny that I tried calling them today to let them know that I have read a lot of negative stuff and that I hoped that I would be the lucky one. I could not reach a live person. Red flag. Thanks John and give me a prayer. brotherchuckles80 aka Charles
