Does anyone feel old and useless with age?

Hi, I'm almost 64.. I'm feeling old and useless. My strength isn't good anymore. Like it used to be mainly side effects of meds. My health is poor with cvsd. Osteoporosis, poor circulation, hearing , eyesight, you name it's going. I always took care of myself. Now I've gotten older and everything's wrong, my grandkids don't a want me around and they are little still. No friends to talk with or do things with. Why is it we spend our lifetime taking care of family. Loving friends to end up , old and tired. Useless.

I feel so so sorry for you but you really think an online psychologist is going to solve your problems?
SSRI’s have been around for years and I discovered them when Prozac was on the cover of Time Magazine. Finally I had a name for what I had been suffering from since my freshman year in college.
I immediately called my PCP the next day and said this article was describing me and my mother who made my childhood miserable.
Unlike my mother who denied she suffered from depression and continued to self medicate with alcohol I immediately called my PCP who ironically was my mother’s PCP and had her prescribe Prozac for me. Unfortunately Prozac didn’t react well with my brain and I tried Zoloft/ Sertraline. I had control of my life back and the roller coaster I was on finally stopped. Later I met with a psychiatrist who added Buspar, Bupropion and Klonopin. I have been taking all three for over 30 years. Yes I have been taking the same dose of Klonopin for thirty years and I have never increased the dosage or suffered any side effects.
People have to start taking control of their own lives or they can die like my mother still medicating with alcohol and denying she had a problem.
It took a toll on my brother and sister and I swore it would not take a toll on my own family. We all have choices. Instead of demonizing all the drugs that can help you find the right ones and take them.

I appreciate you supporting what I had to say.
I opened up on how depression impacted my family and it is never easy to share personal information. In this case it thought it was worth it.
I hope it helps some people on the site. There appears to be some confusion on what depression actually entails.
It can be a debilitating condition and it can anyone. As my psychiatrist said to me some of the most powerful people in my city suffered from it. It doesn’t discriminate based on whether you are rich or poor.
I hope this helps someone out there and maybe lessen the stigma regarding depression. Having high profile people come forward with challenges they face is a step in the right direction.
Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Not treating it is something to be ashamed of because it doesn’t just effect you but also your loved ones.

I'm currently training to facilitate group therapy for a number of mental health challenges. One of them is WRAP. Wellness Recovery Action Plan. It utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy DBT among others. Out of the 8 people present 7 are online and only one attending in person with myself and the co-facilitator. The on-line patients benefit positively
from the psychosocial structure of being in a ZOOM meeting with like minded peers struggling with depression and anxiety. Each of the patients look forward to these 2 hour sessions and interact well with each other. Many people are not comfortable or have no way to physically attend these meetings. For many, this is their sole opportunity to socialize with peers like themselves. Online therapy is extremely beneficial for many as it helps break down that wall of loneliness. Many might never get the help needed to move them outside the rooms they isolate in. I absolutely endorse online therapy as an alternative to no therapy. The psychosocial needs are supplemented in many, and in some, the online group meets needs they absolutely have no way of getting otherwise. I hope this helps clarify how online therapy can be beneficial. Make it an awesome day!!

Depression is real and talking about it is a start but the next step is finding a medication that works for you or in this case them.
It is hard to find a good psychiatrist especially these days and if you do you might be two weeks or longer to get in to see them. On top of that it can take up to six weeks for the medication to work.
I would recommend you bring up Zoloft/ Sertraline on your call. It is one of the leading anti depressants on the market and combine it with Wellbutrin/ Bupropion. It actually has a nickname. It is called Welloft because it compliments the Zoloft.
Good luck to you and your group. I am glad you are all getting together but depression is not something you can talk your way out of. There should be no stigma in getting help.

I suffer from anxiety and depression and leaving my house and mixing with people, I went to see a CBT (cognitive, behavioural, therapist) which was 5 minutes walk away from where I lived, the anxiety I would start to feel 10 days before the appointment was awful, I would be dreading leaving the house and walking there, I did it for about 10 sessions which was great, but I had to give it up because the anxiety was crippling, so to do online therapy would be perfect for me and your sound amazing and I'm sure helping lots of people.

Please don't confuse *feeling* old and useless with *being* old and useless.

Be careful that you don't create a harmful reality. As I say, you can always come to Connect and help lift the spirits of others. That is important work, and very useful!

I don't advocate for drugs as I am not a doctor. I am state certified in Peer Strengthening and Peer Support Specialist only. I share only my experience. In my experience to fight my depression and anxiety I found drugs to be more harmful than good. Physical and psychosocial activities combined with therapy was successful for MYSELF. I focus on rehabilitation of dependence issues. Therefore I would never advocate the use of drugs. SMI and dual diagnosed clients are encouraged to follow the direction of licensed counselors and Primary Care Physicians. Neither of which I am.

Stories actually they are documentaries of our personal struggles are meant to encapsulate our desire to achieve a better something out of life. Many times we can’t define it other than feelings we have. Losses that have occurred. Illnesses to be dealt with. Hopelessness of it all. It goes on and on. Swirling taking us down to depths and despair. Through it all we have to find answers. Old age is not a death knoll. So strength comes from within. From support or church. Family or friends. Even relatives or neighbors. Assisted living can help the infirmed to live independently. Changes will occur and sometimes sacrifices are needed to ensure we can be taken care of if needed.

I was just relating to the group what has worked for me for over 30 years. I am going to be 74 in April.
I question whether you truly suffer from severe depression because if you do I don’t think what you are doing would be enough.
We are all different and if it works for you that is great. As my psychiatrist said oh so many years ago after we found a good combination of drugs for me was quite simply “If it is not broke don't fix it”

I also had anxiety going to a therapist in person. One of the online clients served points her cam at her cat. Still, she verbally interacts in group and provides valuable input with her goals, accomplishments and frustration. She is a valuable asset simply by participating as she reinforces to all that we are not alone in this struggle. Your primary care physician should be able to furnish resources for online therapy groups. This app you and I are corresponding on also has zoom weekly meetings for a variety of subjects. That would a other resource. One of my Peer Support instructors constantly harps " the internet is your best friend " when it comes to finding resources. For myself, spending time volunteering to help others has had amazing results with depression. You can absolutely be the person you wish to be.
To seek peace and harmony outside oneself, is to leave it far behind. The secret to life is in the found in the book of mirrors. Each page you turn, you find yourself. Many spend their entire lifetime seeking this book of knowledge never to find it has always been there in front of them. Today, tell yourself what you are going to do to face a challenge you have. Your goal for today is work on a plan at your own pace. You can absolutely do this. There is no failure when moving forward at your own pace. I wish you the very best. You got this.
