Dietician said only stay hydrated with Stage 3b CKD....no other diet
Frustrating, my eGFR is 32, but the renal dietician said I only need to drink enough water, no other dietary changes (mostly pescaterian now). A year ago when my eGFR was 52 the nephrologist said just hydrate. I asked her if there are any books or charts that help with a stage 3b diet, and she dismissed that. I don't have diabetes, high BP, or heart disease and am on Jardiance because I don't tolerate meds. They tend to be reactive rather than proactive, treat it rather than slow the decline. Have your had the "don't worry about it" dismissive "advice"?

1 ReactionMy experience is the CKD dieticians in my area can advise you when you’re on dialysis but they’re not proficient in what you need for other levels, especially 3b where my husband and I both are. Also they can only advise when you’re in the hospital. We have none that are in private practice or that do telehealth consultations.

2 Reactions@lsrhode This one was certainly a dud. She also tried to give me bad advice on microscopic colitis when she obviously didn't know what it is. Thanks for the info. We definitely have to find our own answers.

2 ReactionsThere are many threads concerning diet with our various kidney problems or other. My continued research into this topic has recently led me to "American College of Lifestyle Medicine"
This organization has specialists across all fields of medicine: Board certified physicians, dietitians, nurse practitioners. All dedicated to improving your health naturally with evidenced based research. Their website to find practitioners is not very friendly, however if you Google the names listed in your area, you will get their information. In my area I have found a dietician and physician who have helped me tremendously. All our journeys continue. Blessings.

3 Reactions@kayabbott Is copper a heavy metal and is it in AREDS2 ? I too have AMD inherited from my dad, thanks dad. But, I thank Dad too for acquiring his genes in low blood pressure and high HDL. Good cholesterol. I'm grateful. I thought it was from my exercise, walking, my nephrologist said, no. My dad died at 93 from a fall, he also had prostate cancer. No heart disease. I hauled in all my (Andrew Lessman) supplements to see what she had to say. She said, there's no proof of what's really in them and they are expensive. She recommended Nature Made it has the USP seal. Affirming the ingredients. It makes sense to me. I was relieved to not have to take so many supplements. Honestly I can't say they have helped. A good B and D3 CoQ10. When there's a long list of various herbs who really knows what's in it. She told me to follow a Mediterranean diet, limit meat and hydrate. We took my labs. I was elated to find my Gfr climbed from 44 four months ago to 60. My creatine 1.26 lowered to 1.02. I've been diligently drinking 64 ounces of water, coffee, tea daily. She said my damage likely came from Aleve. I used to take to alleviate back pain years ago during my career as a postal worker. I stopped Nsaids, 6 years ago. I'll continue to hydrate, eat well and walk because I love to and grateful I still can.

5 Reactions@ddon Yes, copper and zinc are in AREDS2 and are heavy metals. Trace amounts are important to health and part of our RDA. AREDS2 has high levels of those metals and also fat soluble vitamins (A, D..). Because I have kidney disease I switched to a eye vitamin that has carotenoids and lutein (Maccuhealth there but should be other brands). Carotenoids are also found in colorful veggies such as carrots and beets. I also eat a mostly Mediterranean diet. My Stage 3 CKD resulted from norovirus 2.5 years ago.

2 ReactionsI've had the same advice given and yes, Jardiance does help. However, check into the Renal Diet. I began it last year and it has tremendously helped with slowing the progression of the ckd. There are several books out for people with ckd 3b on the Renal Diet. You can find several online. They are very informative and worth reading and doing. Keep us updated on how you are faring. Have a great day.

4 ReactionsI was diagnosed with 3b in 2023. During the hospital stay back then, I was more like stage 5. My creatinine was around 6, eGFR was in the teens and everything else was abnormal. It took about a year to get to creatinine around 2.22 and eGFR in the low 30s. I read everything I could find, also had help from someone else that had renal issues. The Neph told me I had made a nice recovery. I was told to back off of red meat, stay hydrated. I asked about diet changes. NOPE, none needed. When talking with my Primary, he seemed more concerned, but still didn't offer the dietician consultation. I eventually asked. She said my kidneys were actually quite healthy and recovering nicely. She did say to scale back on red meat, but don't eliminate completely. Her biggest concern was ultra-processed and processed food. Enjoy the fruit, veggies, grains. Eat more chicken and fish. Stay hydrated. I eat a salad for lunch most days. Have a bowl of fruit in the morning - the berries. Turkey, fish and chicken are in my diet, but today I did have a beef burger. That happens about once a month. The dietician was fine with beef a couple of times a month. She suggested recipes from Davita, Nat'l Kidney Foundation and they include lean beef in some of their stuff. I do more of my own cooking to limit salt. I watch my phosphates, potassium, sodium and protein. She suggested 45-60 grams of protein per day. Still at 3b, eGFR is quite stable at 38, creatinine is around 1.85. As I write this, I'm due for my daily walk, so, hope this is helpful.
