Diarrhea side effects from the Big 3

Posted by machelp @machelp, Jan 28 6:41pm

I began taking the big 3 in mid-December and am also on Arikayce treatments daily. My main side effect is frequent diarrhea, and I also feel very weak. My ID physician prescribed anti-diarrhea powder, but the diarrhea only subsided slightly. I am at the point where I have to wear Depends, which has put a hold on my marital love life. I want to be cured of the MAC, but is this treatment worth it? I have a virtual appointment with my ID physician tomorrow. Please help me!

Lori,
Although I didn't eat a lot of sauerkraut growing up like you did, I do enjoy it on Reuben sandwiches and hot dogs with mustard. I found Sabrett sauerkraut at Publix a couple of days ago. It was in the cooler with the hot dogs.
I first experienced kimchi when I lived in the Far East. As I recall, kimchi was very popular in Korea. I have a question: When I buy kimchi, does it have to be raw; or can I purchase it in a jar?

Publix is my happy place. For anyone with even a hint of OCD it is a little slice of heaven. 😂 I haven’t seen the Sabrett brand of kraut, but I guess I stopped looking when I found Cleveland Kraut. That’s in the produce area by the cultured drinks and Kimchi.
Kimchi is raw whether in the jar or package. So a jar is fine!
It is a staple Korean dish and I’m so happy it’s become popular in the US.

Well???? Inquiring minds want to know. LOL Have you seen any improvement in your digestive system since starting the new ‘take back ownership of my guts’ program? 😅

I thought I was doing better with some form to my stools with my better diet, but I think I blew it. I thought I was doing so well that I smothered a couple of franks with sauerkraut and ended up with diarrhea again. I have to remember to take it slow.

Barbara, I went to Aldi today and didn't see the black container you suggested. I bought a carton of Friendly Farms Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt. According to the label, it contains several live and active cultures. I also bought a 32 oz. carton of Friendly Farms Probiotic Kefir Blueberry Cultured Lowfat Milk. My plan is to start tomorrow adding the yogurt and Kefir to my diet to help my gut with the diarrhea side effects from the antibiotics.

Kathy,
Another aid for your gut health is Turkey Tail mushroom mycelium powder.
It helps the immune system and microbiom support. It is a natural prebiotic.
You can find it here:
hostdefense.com
Or at a Sprouts grocery store.

Baby steps! I know you’re excited to feel normal again! This is a slow process over weeks and months. So back off for a few days on the kraut and watch the processed/greasy foods. Opt for ‘clean’ foods for a while until your guts are stable. Then occasionally a few cheater foods might be ok. Ha you got that taste of freedom and went wild. 😅

Lori,
I was so excited to finally get out of those Depends and get back to my "normal" life so I celebrated with splurging on sauerkraut that I thought had helped heal my gut. Unfortunately, I overdid it. I can't think you enough for all your advice and support. I never expected for this to be such a long horrendous journey just to get back to leading a normal life.

At least now you know it’s possible to have some normalcy and life without Depends! I know that feeling of exuberance! But slow and steady wins this race. ☺️ No hot doggies and kraut for a while. Small amounts of kraut yes…but not on a greasy dog!
Do a little sleuthing online. There are some great sites with lists of healthy foods for helping to heal the guts and foods to avoid. Good recipes too!
Keep going and try not to get discouraged. Your intestinal wall has been damaged. While the cells do turnover quickly, it still takes months to undo the longterm damage to correct the walls and replace the good micro biome needed for optimal health. ☺️

Lori, I am open to any new healthy recipes you might recommend. I love to cook and especially enjoy trying new recipes. I'm having fun using the smoothie blender my son gave to me.

Ooo your son is a keeper! LOL. The smoothie blender is a great gift for you.
I guess I don’t have specific recipes to suggest. My husband and I have pretty much followed the Mediterranean Diet for several decades. But there are a number of great recipe sites online for healing the gut such as these for example:

Here’s the link for The Mediterranean diet!

Bon Appetite! ☺️
